The Ultimate Deity Challenge -- Survival among Warmongers

That could be an even harder game. One of the things that made this one so difficult was the lack of room to expand. But it'll probably always be that way since overexpanding means you can't defend yourself.

I tinkered a bit with the WB and it seems easy enough, just choose civs then you can move them around by deleting/adding units, so I simply need to generate a good map then swap positions if necessary to get everyone where they are supposed to be.
A dual hemispheres map might actually be better than continents, easier to set up at least. So if anyone's interested just let me know, along with what leader you want to play.

I can look into generating and WB a dual continents map with warmongers on the players continent and peacemongers on the other if anyone is interested. :)

That sounds like an interesting challenge. Although we had done something similar before but AIs are mixed up. (see my sig)

So put MM, Williem, HC, Hannibal on one land mass.

Human, Shaka, Monty, GK on the other land mass.

Maybe take Churchill as human?

Without a very good start, the chance is minimal. HC and Hannibal is not that peaceful, Liz and Gandhi are better.
Any protective leaders has better chance for this setting, imo SB is the best choice.

Agree with SB, at least we'll have good defense against the warheads. The real problem'll probably be the other continent.

I agree. The problem is the pure peacemongers are usually not the best civs. Then again I've never seen a controlled game like this where there are no warmongers to hurt them. I also thought of HC, Willem etc but none of those can be trusted, I think the peacemonger continent should have leaders that;'

All have high peaceweights.

Don't attack at pleased.

Trade lots of tech at cautious or better or perhaps even at annoyed (will have a look at xml).

If possible is not a religious nut (will befriend other religions).

SB sounds good, I'll open a new thread with the new game once I'm finished tinkering.

Maybe you can add Zara and Joao, peaceful enough and significantly stronger than the pure peacemongers who don't expand much. These guys tend to go for the space race instead of cultural too.

I went through the XML carefully and have made my choices. The number one priority was getting good techers that are generally peaceful and accepting of neighbours and who I hope will go for space rather than culture. We'll see how it turns out, it will be interesting.

Very compelling thread. I can't help dig it out from the bottom and take a try.;)

We can find in this thread how the best players in CFC got rid of messy situation: survived the early dow, launched their first kill and won the game. It also illustrates us the variety of warfares in CIV IV: Chariot + HA, Cuirassiers, Rifles, Canons, Bombers+Tanks, ect.

It seems that Samurais have been ignored in this previous games. What a shame for them. So:

Spoiler :
I forgot to keep all the autosaves, so I have only screenshots. Try to report as detailed as possible.

As previous plays were under 3.13, I tried to finish the game under the rules of 3.13 in 3.19. That is: I can't trade any techs with my vassals unless he's friendly with me.

First DoW from Shaka at turn 80:
Spoiler :
I don't think an early rush against Shaka in this map is the best idea. It's not that we can't win this war but it will cause much risk. Sahka and us have much more probability to get DoW by a 3rd-party when we are at war. Apparently we are much more accessible for them than Shaka.

Good resources: Marble and Gold. Nothing can stop us after we build the GL, Pantheon and NE. So Shaka has to DoW me before that.

As he doesn't have Copper and hooked the Iron late, his SoD is just a bunch of Swordmen + Impi + Archer. They got killed under the wall of Osaka by 5 Archers.

We have great risk to get DoW by another warmonger, so I sue for peace with him (at the cost of Alphabet) at t 87, before I get a 4-level unit. Pity.

Second DoW from Alex + Saka at turn 100:
Spoiler :
This time is Alex and he bribed Shaka. But Alex don't have Copper/Iron so his army is Catapult and, Chariots! Bad preparation. I guess it's just a dogpile war he planned when I was at war with Shaka.

Shaka's no better. He doesn't have Catapults but he has Crossbow, so I have to whip some Archers+Axemen.

The war is bitter. Osaka and Tokyo are longtime under 3 pop. The other two cities are not productive neither. Fortunately cap is good.

Third DoW from Ragnar at turn 127:
Spoiler :
Again a DoW! This time is much more serious.

In fact I noticed Ragnar got busy before. When I was at war with Shaka (got peace with Alex), I saw Ragnar's SoD coming to me. Fortunately I'd given some techs to him and stayed No state-religion, he's pleased with me and I asked him for some petty money.

That delayed the war by 10 turns. During this 10 turns, I get peace with Shaka, bribe him to DoW Ragnar, launch a GA, and spam out some Longbow. That's how I survive again.
Spoiler :
Viking SoD hanging around:
Civ4ScreenShot4128.jpg

He has 4 catapults but all go home. Don't know why. Easy defense with Longbow +50% + Hill city:
Civ4ScreenShot4152.jpg

First DoW to Shaka at turn 146- Kill him at turn 163:
Spoiler :
I launched two successive GA (First one with a GS, second one with a GS and a GA from Music). So my HE+Bureau Cap can spam one Samurai/Tre per turn. Soon I have around 25 units of SoD, mix of Samurai+Tre+Longbow.

I have much time to torture Shaka since everyone is at war (GK+Gilga=>Monty, Shaka+Alex=>Ragnar). What is more worrying is the economy, I have only +44 gold under 0% slider. I count on War economy: every capture of city gives 200g.

Curiously no one went for Liber even they had Education+Philo. I got Gunpowder+Printing Press+Nationalism+Chemistry by selling Education, so I'm lucky to Liberbulb Steel at t165.

Second DoW to Monty at turn 174 - Kill him at turn 185:
Spoiler :
Monty has been suffering from Mongolian attacks for a long time. He lost some cities to GK and Gilga. GK is growing too strong, so I bribe GK to make peace with Monty and it's my turn to kill him.

Monty had only five cities left, I capture four and Gilga get one. Then Monty is out.

Civ4ScreenShot4235.jpg

I happened to pop a GA in the Cap. In order not to waste him, I Culturebombed the newly conquest Aztec cap. It helps a lot: notice that GK can't touch Gilga or Alex if I cancel the OB with him. So he has no chance to capitulate Gilga or Alex if I don't want it.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot4239.jpg

Third DoW to Gilga at turn 188 - Kill him at turn 220:
Spoiler :
The war machine can't be stopped. Gilga's border city is vulnerable.

I DoWed him and bribed Alex and GK to join me (Ragnar is vassal of GK so he is at with us at well). Then I close the border to GK. Gilga is mine!;)

I made a short peace with him at t 205 but reDowed several turns later after my SoD was recovered. The battle is long but luckily it's not that tough.

Civ4ScreenShot4273.jpg

Won Space at t323.
Spoiler :

After 3 kills, the game is actually won. I have half of the world and every one is friendly with each other. Though Alex and Ragnar are willing to be vassals of GK, GK is far away from winning Domination/UN.

Any kind of win is now possible for me, I decide to go for Space because as an ethical player, I don't kill a friendly AI. (Not true, Space is less time consuming and tiring, that's all:p). The problem is to catch up with GK on techs. Curiously the warmongers are quite advanced this game. And GK has Ragnar as vassal that boost his tech as well.

Secret is to perform some EP: I have an Hindu shrine. I go for AL+Communism to build factories+Agency. Then Electricity+Radio to build the Cristo Dude. Switch to Nationhood+SP+Hindu, boost about 30000EP and steal Industrialism + Combustion + Flight + Plastics + Rocket + Satellites + Advanced Flight + Laser. And get the rest from Internet.

That's it. Another Samurai show :)

Good to see another finishing play.:goodjob:

It also illustrates us the variety of warfares in CIV IV: Chariot + HA, Cuirassiers, Rifles, Canons, Bombers+Tanks, ect.

You forgot the nukes. This was the only game I used them. A dozens of cities were fallen in the 1st turn of war and half of the world was conquered in 4 turns -- the major reason I dislike the nuclear war. It's as ??? as AP diplomatic victory.
