In an attempt to actually be useful though, Wikipedia lists the population of Wales as about 3 million and those of English birth but Welsh residence to be about 600,000, so 20% of all people in Wales would appear to be either English or English-born.

whether my grandfather was Welsh or English. We know he was from Newport

Can you check Newport archives? People usually leave trace there in the dusty archive papers, at least at the memorable moments of their birth and death. You may even discover info on your great-gandfather and further into the murky mists of ages.

I'm afraid not, Snerk. My accent is slightly Cotswolds after living here for over 20 years, but mostly a mix of RP English and Estuary English, having spent my formative years in the Home Counties.

(I have a very bad ear for accents, so mine has almost never changed since I first picked one up.)
Ear or accent?
Do a lot of English people live in Newport? What about Wales in general?

I know it sounds weird but we're not sure in my family whether my grandfather was Welsh or English. We know he was from Newport, but we're under the impression he's English.
Was he born in Newport, or did he cross the sea on a boat sailing from there?

Also, you'd better look at the demographics in Newport at the time, not those now in the following century.

Naturally, my ears are totally different to the ones I grew up with, as the cells in them have been replaced many times since then. #ShipofTheseus

Great, now Kyriakos will go philosophical on our asses. Last thing you know, and we'll be shooting an arrow while a turtle and a rabbit are racing on a race track with mines to figure out quantum entanglement.

If an ear renews it's cells in the woods, does it become a new ear? And did it hear the tree fall?

The biggest question is: is it really 'ear today, gone tomorrow?

You should ask Tolni, he has an ear for these things.

'Ear, 'ear!

I thought of a really good question for this thread only yesterday.

But What was it?

Why does it hurt to wake up in the morning instead of fading into the neverending black hole of non-existence?

Has Obama nominated a Supreme Court judge yet?

No. And I don't understand what's taking so long. Obama has from the start not put enough emphasis on judicial appointments. He should have learned better by now.

What is that thing sent to Mars going to do? The joint Russian/European probe that launched yesterday. I read somewhere that it was supposed to have 2 rovers on-board, including a NASA one, but now they only have 1?
The main payload is an orbiter that will analyze the atmosphere of Mars. The secondary payload is an experimental descent vehicle that will give ESA and Roscosmos practical experience with successfully landing a payload on Mars. I don't think it will do much science once it lands - it's more a test run for the rover that is to follow.

They currently plan on launching a rover in a few years that will come equipped with a drill that can go deep enough to sample a layer of regolith that doesn't see much radiation and hopefully find life down there or at least favorable conditions for it. The rover follow-up is currently in doubt due to technical and budgetary concerns.

Originally, NASA was ESA's partner on this mission and I think the plan was to launch the orbiter and rover together. NASA pulled out due to budget cuts and Roscosmos stepped in and absent NASA's expertise with Mars landings, I think they opted to split the payloads to give the first mission a chance to do a full dress rehearsal of the landing of the rover. And AFAIK, Russia's main contribution to the effort is the launch vehicles and some minor science instruments.

No. And I don't understand what's taking so long. Obama has from the start not put enough emphasis on judicial appointments. He should have learned better by now.

I figure he's taking the time to try and negotiate a backroom deal. He missed the opportunity for a recess appointment and I guess he reckons the Republicans are not bluffing when they say they won't have hearings. So he's trying to work something out with them in private? :dunno:

Probably a losing strategy. They won't deal with him. What would he even have to bargain with?

I think that 'missed' implies that he didn't deliberately choose not to take that option, which I thought was pretty clear.
