Ok, I have all the animations done for the Asha'man unit. All that's left now is the modeling (clothes/props), special effects (use of the source), and rendering. My next step will be modeling, but that may take me a little while since I'm still learning 3DS Max. We'll see. But I just wanted to give you guys a little insight into what I'm working on. :D

Here's a rundown of the animations:
Default: standing there, taking a breath
Fidget: balances a glowing orb above his right hand
Fortify: assumes a type of "warning" stance
Attack A: pushing motion that uses a fireball attack
Attack B: reaches up and calls lightning down from the sky to the area he's pointing at with his other hand
Death: consumed by lightning as he crumbles to the earth (from taking on too much of the source)
Victory: throws both arms up as rays of light shoot up out of his hands

you know... real easy type stuff. ;)

BeBro, posted these a little bit ago. Well, today actually... No it's after midnight make that yesterday... Anywho, I thought that his templar would make a good whitecloak. It's white with a red cross on the shield and the horses "clothes." Some of his other knights may be of use for some of the randland civs.

Here's his thread so you can go look at them...
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=98533

Here is what make it nice. He did all of his knights with a lance attack as well as with sword attacks. Didn't Mayene use mostly lancers?

This is a very low quality snapshot of the asha'man "playing with fire" during his fidget animation. Don't worry everything will be highly improved by the time I release this unit. I just wanted to give you guys a glimpse, and let you all know that I have been hard at work. ;)

here you go:

Sorry if I seem a bit overexcited, but in a minute you'll understand why. :) A little while back Kinboat agreed to help me out with some modeling for the units I've been working on, and earlier tonight I got my hands on the work he's done for me with the Asha'man unit.

The model was based off of this picture of Mazrim Taim.
(don't worry, the final version will have hair :) )
I'll also attach a sword to his hip... and I might work with the colors just a bit.

So without further adieu, here you go:

Amazing. That is a great looking model. This will be a great visual mod once you've mastered unit making.

I feel like I've got a fairly good grasp on working with Poser. The interface is really user friendly once you you get the hang of it. Really the last big hurdle I have left to overcome is learning how to use 3DS Max to model all of my own clothing and props. That one's a bit of a bugger, but I'm determined. ;)

For this unit, I've got the model ready (thanks to Kinboat), I've worked out all the animations, so not counting the actual rendering process all I have left to do is work in the special effects like lightning and fire. And Ripptide has been wonderful enough to provide me with a simple tutorial on creating explosion and lighting effects using 3DS Max. I could use Poser for this and be done, but its quality in the special effects department is not nearly the same as Max.

This week is going to be a busy one for me, so I doubt I'll be able to put everything together, but I'll try and post some previews of the animations when I have the time, and HOPEFULLY be able to publish the finished product some time next week. :D This being my first unit, I'm very eager to get it out there, but I also don't want to release it until I'm fully satisfied. I don't want to get any "hope your next product will be better" type compliments. ;)

Ah! A fellow perfectionist. This will be a very good mod for sure then, if you are as anal as I about making everything perfect. ;)

And I don't mean any fetish either.

Oh TJ, you have no idea. ;) I can't even count how many hours I've invested into this unit already. Back when I was making the map earlier in the year, I went through the entire thing square by square. I think it's to the point of sickness with me. :twitch: But it's all worth it in the end. :D

I agree. I thought I was the only one that made maps square by square. Made a 280x280 once that made me go blind by the time I was done.

While I'm working on finishing up the Asha'man unit, I thought I'd post suggestions for his use in the game. We've hinted at styling the unit after the Sengoku/shogun conquest in that there'll be a progression of abilities when you upgrade from Asha'man level 1 to Asha'man level 2, and so forth. The upgrades become available with different techs, signifying a new gain in knowledge or ability in the one power. So here's what I suggest.

A1: has fireball attack
A2: has fireball & lightning attack
A3: has fireball & lightning attack, plus manipulate air and heightened senses (invisibility* & radar traits)
A4: has fireball & lightning attack, radar & invisibility traits, plus skimming (all terrain as roads + increased moves per turn)
A5: has fireball & lightning attack, radar & invisibility traits, plus traveling (airdrop & re-base abilities), and transport X amount of foot units

* I wasn't sure if invisibility or stealth would be better here
+ along with gaining new abilities, attack, defense, and bombard strengths will change as they progress.

These are some of my thoughts on the progression, let me know what you all think. :D

Stealth is no good for foot units, and invisibility sometimes causes unwanted war, but then that makes sense as nobody wants the Asha'man around. I like the ideas so far.

Just a friendly note to say:
The skimming is a good idea so long as the upgrade to railroad option is removed from the mod... :)

Most definitely. Alerum's always trying to convice me that Mat's on the verge of discovering the use of gunpowder, but I don't think they're anywhere close to inventing the railroad/train system. :mischief:

There'll probably be a couple of working actions that will be taken out of the mod.

Mat might discover gunpowder, but he won't invent steam or coal power anytime soon. Most likely he'll design cannons or bombs, and highly unlikely but possible figure out how to make a musket of some kind.

EDIT: That guy who invented the machine that moves, now he might design a railroad, but not in these books. That would take a ton of time.

I'm not sure if it is the same person, but I think that the guy who made that machine was killed.... I don't have all the books (my wife makes me borrow them from the library  ) so I can't look it up.....
