Medieval II that is. Once my empire becomes a moderate size, everybody declares war on me and my army isn't big enough to fight everybody off.

Yes controling 45 provinces is very very hard
I once had 33 provinces in the mid 1300s Half of the countries were eliminated - all of the muslims, orthodox and half of the catholics

Me (Spain) - Denmark and England had an alliance that defeted every other country except the mongols and timurids (and papal states)

Then they attacked each other and it all went ti hell, I think if you have 250 years of an alliance and you're familys are totally mixed it should make a sort of permenante alliance or something....maybe I should learn to write that in as a mod.

In the game arent the mongols and timurids muslim? :)

The ai gangs up on the player of the player has an extended amount of peace. Depending on the difficulty that you are playing on will determine how much the relations decrease per turn. On very hard your relations will constantly decrease unless you constantly or giving gifts etc...

Certain factions will declare war on you to complete their goal of capturing certain cities. When you are expanding be mindful of the settlements you are capturing. Example. as byzantines, capturing durazzo will almost gurantee an eventual war with venice.

Sacking cities will lower your reputation making it more difficult to resume diplomacy, pay attention to alliances of the otehr factions, and of course if your a catholic stay in good relations with the pope. If other catholic factions are attacking you eventually they will get excommunicated. Get the pope to declare a crusade against them. If your faction is muslim then always be somewhat prepared for a crusade to be called against you and in this case it will always be hard to stay with good relations with catholic factions. These ideas are mostly from twcenter.net :)

I say if you have any settlements that would be difficult to defend is getting attack constantly. Offer the city either as a gift to the pope, or sign a ceasefire offering the settlement. hopefully the armies will stop coming into your secure lands. good luck:D

Anyone care to offer some advice?

It's about turn 80. I'm playing as England; I have all of the British isles and West Europe, and I'm starting to expand into the Spanish peninsula and central Europe (I've also conquered Denmark and the isle with Stockholm and Oslo). I have 27 territories, and I'm at war with Germany, Spain, Portugal and France. I'm starting to get overwhelmed with all of the wars; I can't finish off France because the Pope is currently a peace monger, but Portugal and Germany are excommunicated so I'm trying my luck with them. I'm currently in good standing with the Pope and have on Cardinal.

Am I doing OK for turn 80?

Here is my current save: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9S09TBCN

Stockholm is the capital of Swden and oslo is the capital of Norway (AFAIK, they have been at times anyways and are improtant port cities). And they are part of the continent and not islands, though it does look like an Island in game.

For turn 80, you're doing fine.

in my most recent game im playing spain and im at war with the moors AND the european nations (some of them anyway) and after shoving the moors off the continent and invading north africa they just kept trien to kill me and i have even made a small advance into france fighting many battles over 2 castles

We're not talking about your game ;)

LightSpectra: In Total War you'll find that nations are more likely to declare war on you if you share a border. In your case, you border several of the powerful nations, and you've gotten yourself a helluva empire there. Little wonder they want you dead

France only seems to have the one city (you haven't revealed much of the map - I like sending out my diplomats early on to get an idea of other nation sizes), Taking it could end a war on one front, regardless of what ol' Pope thinks.

Other than that, you're doing very well. Particularly if you're holding them off.

Advice: if you can consistantly defeat an enemy in battles, you'll have no problems. If you ARE weak in a certain area build men, hire mercs if you see a good opportunity.

And if all else fails and your fighting a multi-front war. Concentrate on one enemy at a time. Build a couple of armies to defend your other frontiers, and go all out on one of them. Once an enemies destroyed hes not going to bother you eh?

When you decide to take such an approach pick your defending areas sensibly, the Franco-german border is hard to defend, hence, attack.

The Franco-Iberian border on the other hand is really, really easy to defend.

The Italian border has Italian factions in it; KILL KILL KILL.
