I went ice diving in the French alps earlier this year, and therefore read some short things about altitude sickness. Surprisingly it can already kick in from 1000 meters on, apparently. Had not expected that, since I lived for most of my life on the foot of a hill of nearly 1000 meters. Who would have thought that going a few meters higher could be dangerous...?TIL that Salt Lake City is 4,226 ft / 1,288 meters above sea level. Over the weekend, the UFC held an event there, and all of the fighters were "gassing out" much sooner than they usually do. I've seen that happen in sports events in places like Denver and Mexico City, but I didn't realize SLC was high enough to take people's breath. I think SLC has an MLS team; I wonder if their opponents get winded when they play there, or if their players have a little extra juice when they play at lower elevations.
From 2000m on it's apparently more common, not everyone gets it from 1000 on.
