I can't wait for this movie. I just wish they hadn't changed the bad guys from muslim terrorists to neo-nazis. well, even though it'll be shadowed by greats like Spider-Man, Attack of the Clones, Men In Black II, Austin Powers3, it will be a very cool movie. I wonder if it'll still tie into the Yom Kippur War?

Apparently political correctness strikes again...

It's too sad to see a good movie go down the tubes.

I read this book a few years ago. Pretty good. The movie has Ben Afflek and Morgan Freeman in it, right?

I saw the trailer when I saw Spiderman opening night.

All I can say is, Tom Clancy should take his name off of this stinkfest. Stephen King, one of the ****tiest of all prolific writers, took HIS name off of the Lawnmower Man movie. If a hack like him can do it, Clancy sure as hell can.

I will not be there opening night, nor will I catch it on video. Like Blair With Project, this is a movie that I will never see.

It will be worth it just for that five-second shot where the cruise missle smacks into the CVN. AMAZING :goodjob:

As I outlined and predicted in similar threads, they have slaughtered the book into complete offal of a film.

I echo your sentiments. That they have altered villains is a travesty.

Indeed. Not only is it appallingly cloying political correctness, but misses the whole point of the book. Why would the Nazis start World war 3 in order to seize power when they have the Holcroft Covenant?;)

did Clancy concern himself with young Holcraft's inheritance?

Neo-nazi? WTH? These people are no longer a menace for the world.

They supposed that we would be offended.

Hey! My grandfather died because of cigarettes. Am I offended when I see people smoking on tv and in movies?

Congres should pass a law that forbid to change script that comes from a movie.

Yes, this movie sounds like it'll stink! A rookie Jack Ryan? An integral part of the book was that he was (IIRC) Deputy Director of the CIA and the president and NSA cut him out of the loop. How is a rookie CIA guy even going to get in this high level loop in the first place? It's not Red October all over again

I liked the book quite a bit, too. They should have just skipped it for Debt of Honor if they weren't going to bother with something substantial.

I am disappointed it is not goign to be Harrison Ford. I do have a question though, was the character in the book as clueless as Harrison was in the movies? He reacted good under pressure but he seemed a little to unsure of himself during normal times.

In the earlier books, i.e. Red October, Sum of all Fears, Patriot Games, Jack Ryan was, as he called himself several times, "just an analyst, not a field agent".
But on the other hand, in books like Cardinal of the Kremlin and Clear and Present Danger, he was very well informed and made his plans based on that data, and even carried them out hisself.
Ryan (Harrison Ford) was often cut out of the information cycle by higher authorities in his own government and then he was of course a bit clueless about what was going on.
But especially onward from Debt of Honor, where he became the National Security advisor and later the President, he started to be the all-knowledgeable person, our everyday hero, always making the right decisions. :yeah:

The personal development of Jack Ryan is rather conceivable, from the smart analyst, who sometimes knew too much, over the CIA deputy director, who was uncomfortable for some people in power, to the National Security Advisor and eventually President himself. I like it!
:D

P.S.: And I am also DEEPLY dissappointed that Harrison Ford is not playing Jack Ryan. I wonder who´ll they take when making a movie out of Debt of Honor, Executive Orders or The Bear and the Dragon.
Ben Affleck as President???

I'm no fan of Affleck, but I'll give the movie the benefit of the doubt. It could be good; anything with Morgan Freeman in it isn't all bad...

The movie sounds OK, and I might see it. i personally think they should make Debt of Honor instead, if they're gonna chop up the plot like this. But, that movie would have IMMENSE backlash, because of the end, even though it was written a few years back... Same thing with ppl talking about renaming the Two Towers... political correctness run amok....

I read an interview with Tom Clancy the other day which was made after he had seen the movie.

He was very positive about this adaptation of the the book, he hated Pat. Games and Clear and Present Danger.

He also says that Affleck is a better Jack Ryan than Ford was.

Anyway, You can read the interview here:

I still think red storm rising is his best work - and hope that they will smomeday make this into a movie - it would have to be huge to get the whole book - but i think it would be awsome

hmm. I just hope that the movie is better than the last two. the only jack-ryan-movie that was worth anything to me was red october (and that was propably just because of connery).

and neo-nazis instead of muslim extremists?
wasn't the guy that recruited the a-bomb-engineer a former RAF or Baader Meinhoff operative? And now he's a neo-nazi. Yeah, right...Why couldn't they just leave the book as it is?

as for red storm rising: making a movie out of that book would really be a challenge.

if the ever make debt of honour there will propably be major changes as well: or does anyone of you believe that an airliner crash into the capitol wouldn't remind people too much of 9/11?
