I think that if you were to remove the tail of the Water Buffalo, and emphasize the fur mane at its shoulders, it would be a perfectly acceptable American bison.

Distinctive politely describes them perfectly. Perhaps I will do one and post it, to see how it looks. And then see if it's merited to continue or not. The low poly models might be able to be improved through mesh smoothing (or w/e 3ds calls it), and the textures can be improved upon as well (if they make enough of a difference in quality).

There are a number of workers ( peasants ) included in Steph's cossack conversions that might be worth a look.

Preta ("Hungry Ghost")

Preta is the name for a type of (arguably supernatural) being described in Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, and Jain texts that undergoes more than human suffering, particularly an extreme degree of hunger and thirst. They are often translated into English as "hungry ghosts", from the Chinese, which in turn is derived from later Indian sources generally followed in Mahayana Buddhism.
