Top 10 Safest places in the World

Guatemala is 3 ranks safer than Syria at 112 and only 5 ranks worse than Mexico. Wooo!

Also USA #86!!! Safety is for wimps!

Czech Rep. is safer than Switzerland? :dubious:

Must be the avalanches.

Defense spending factors into their calculations. I would imagine that little Switzerland spends more on that than Czechia does, if it ranks as "less safe." But then I know little about Czechia's defense spending, so I may be wrong.

The Global Peace Index lists countries in terms of safety. It is researched in far more depth than other attempts, using statistics from crime rates, violence levels and other things like wars and militay expenditure. The Global Peace Index (GPI) currently lists 149 countries and regions which are listed below, the safest country being at the top, the least safe at the bottom.

So does anyone have anything resembling an actual safety index, removing the factors which I highlighted?

However it is obvious that this won't actually develop into a discussion any of the two of us stands to gain something from, so i wish you happy holidays to your next summer destination, in Sunni Albania :)

Tirane is actually supposed to be a really nice place to visit.

The peace index isn't equivalent to safety. A better indicator of safety would be violent crime alone. Is the US really that much more unsafe because we have an astronomical military budget? No, we're unsafe because we have tons of urban areas like New Orleans, Baltimore, St. Louis, and Detroit which have loads of crime.

There's many other factors which should come into play even for a safety index though, such as (as has been said) car accidents and natural disasters. It's all well and good living in a country with minimal violent crime, if you're just going to go get killed by the latest flood/sandstorm/high-speed car chase.

Kind of sad that we are behind many countries that I would consider to be dangerous or unstable parts of the world.

Do remember that the US military budget absolutely dwarfs that of most of those states combined, and that most of them states aren't currently engaged in any actual wars, both of which probably come into play.

Does it bring peace, though? Excluding WW2 for the minute, which wars have ended well again? Come to think of it, did WW2 actually ever end?

And of the estimated privately-owned (?) 500 million (?) firearms (?) in the world, the US owns 170 million (?).

What are the latest statistics on homicide in the US? Yes. Certainly. Lower than Mexico, I know.

New Zealand has nasty earthquakes.

Las Vegas is the safest since we have no natural disasters.

Right, your survival is just dependent upon pumped-in water.

It's funny that liberals tend to hate my city because it's unnatural. The thing is, so is New York City. They have to get water from a source hundreds of miles away (our source of water is less than 50 miles away). The water we use is a drop in the bucket compared to what California uses for farming. I heard they even farm rice!

But I do agree our population is too high. Too much traffic. But I feel the same way about the entire U.S. We are causing too much environmental damage to the world, and the world population needs to be reduced to 1/50th the current levels.

Speaking of water our suburb gets it from a local spring and it is pumped up to a reservoir.

Well I have never communicated it on these forums but I am one of those "liberals" who think that Las Vegas shouldn't exist, it just makes no freaking sense from any view why the hell we have allowed it to grow considering any of its geography. Then again I think pretty much the same for nearly any city in California including San Francisco, but meh.

Security through superior firepower, not peace. The blade incites itself to violence.

Good point, I stand corrected. Though the salesman on Minos may disagree! (HA! IT WAS A TREK REFERENCE, PEOPLE!!!)

"If you need a little something 'special', be it for one target, or multiple targets, we got it, you'll see it, here on Minos, where we live by the motto, 'Peace through superior firepower'."

Which liberal here has voiced such an opinion?

To answer your question from an idiot's perspective (from which the original premise rests), are you yourself the only other political binary option available, a :scared:Conservative:scared:?

Thought not ;)

All cities are bad.

We are off to go pillaging the wonderful pillage of Oz!

Looting, pillaging, sacking a major city, and I'd like nine thousand other charges to be taken into consideration, please. :D
--------

But anyways I certainly wouldn't purposefully destroy Vegas (or most cities including pretty much anything in Australia/California). Either nature will eventually take care of it, itself - or human ingenuity will find some solution. Its just there are easier places to build cities which is why some cities in the world (particularly in the US) are so amusing.

We are causing too much environmental damage to the world, and the world population needs to be reduced to 1/50th the current levels.
Whoa!

Why 1/50th?

What happens to the other 49/50ths?

What makes you think 1/50th couldn't cause as much or more environmental damage?

We need more population actually. The more we have, the higher percentage likelihood we get new Einsteins and scientists that push humanity further, not backwards. There is a reason Malthus never was right and that Europe didn't fall into constant starvation and death, that would lead to its ultimate decline. The more people, the more likely we are to break out of positive feedback loops
