Top 10 Safest places in the World

I hate that Western Sahara always is grey on every map.

At least it is not yet annexed (part of it) by Algeria, since then Algeria would have a freakishly ugly border.

I don't think automobile accidents are related that much to the military. I think they meant "Top 10 Most Secure Places in the World".

Uh, surely those were old pics and i had my problems then. Not sure what the point of mentioning that was? :shake:

I'm sorry I was not aware of that. My recollection was that we all loved those photos and it was a bit of a running gag. I was just imagining that it would be funny if every one of those expressions was a result of you seeing a map and getting pissed at yet another grey Western Sahara. I didn't mean any harm.

That dragon looks like it's suffering from a deep, chesty cough.

EDIT: I am a stupid person who failed to notice the third page. In my defence, free iPad apps!

Bhutan looks cool. Less than a million in population, about the size/form of an inverted Fyrom, and landlocked between China and India.

Surely it is not any protectorate at all.

It does have a very cool flag though:

Tell me that dragon is holding dragonballs.

TELL ME NOW!

It also gives the appearance that Cyprus is more Greek than Turkish, being as it's coloured yellow rather than orange.

It is though?

I thought those old pics of you were great! I very much enjoyed trying to spot the differences. And they featured a rather interesting, if baffling, curtain, iirc.

Still, I'm sorry to hear you had problems. It wasn't obvious, to me at any rate.

Can you now post a series of near identical but smiley ones, please?

I can confirm that New Zealand is incredibly safe.. not only in terms of people, but also in terms of the animals on the islands.. they just can't kill you! There is the question of volcanoes however..

I was thinking about this while reading the thread title. As far as I remember new Zealand lies on the edges of tectonic plates, so volcanoes, and I think earthquakes as well, are problems. With regard to natural hazards, Denmark is the safest country, if I remember correctly.

Yep.. The volcano I hiked on the side of erupted last November for example. And an unrelated earthquake destroyed parts of Christchurch after my visit as well.

Not to say that it's catastrophical down there, but NZ is on the ring of fire.

Somehow i doubt Greece is as dangerous as Albania.

Oh, no, Greece is not as dangerous as Albania.

Greece is worse. By eleven ranks. (2012 numbers)

(That said, this is a very new development - prior to 2012, Greece was constantly far ahead of Albania. It's probably the debt crisis, protests, rise in popularity of far-right parties, etc that are torpedoing Greece's rating)

Yeah, not very likely. Surely there are problems here with crime, mostly due to Albanian illegals/criminals.

Pretty sure there are more of those in Albania itself though...

As I said, it's a very new change. BEFORE 2011, Greece was always ahead of Albania - but Greece's safety rating has been freefalling the last few years.

77th in 2012 (Albania 66th)
65th in 2011 (Albania 63rd)
62nd in 2010 (Albania 65th)
57th in 2009 (Albania 75th)
54th in 2008 (Albania 79th)
44th in 2007 (Albania not ranked)

Given what they use to measure this index, large-scale violent protests (you've been havinng those I hear), and political instability are huge issues that can and will drag down your numbers. So that's probably what's killing Greece.

I can't say for a fact but I strongly suspect that the level of discrimination in a society probably also contributes. For example, blaming the Albanians for everything that's wrong.

Just saying.

The level of discussion I'm used to is one where comments like "(Insert culture) Foreigners are responsible for the criminality here" get (rightly) frowned upon as a fundamentally xenophobic sort of statement.

As for the rest of my post: that IS the situation with Greece. Its safety rating IS in freefall. That seems to correspond with certain developments in the country (political (in)stability, massive demonstrations) that are objectively known to contribute to the safety rating). I don't know what level of discussion you have a problem with in there.

Maybe the Greeks could annex FYROM to average out a little of their protests, might mellow out their ranking a bit.
