I like to see other reference to play in the future so I made this thread, here is my top 5 rpg btw:

In Snes:
1. Chrono Trigger: I play this game like.... 10 time already? if you haven't play Chrono Trigger, do play this game!

Link to video.

and suprisingly this game appear to be strongly in favor with Christianity
Spoiler :
and Chrono seem to be a representation of Jesus/Isa (pbuh) himself
:

Link to video.
(if you want to play the game don't watch this video because it contain spoiler.

2. Breath of Fire 2: Breath of Fire 2 is the best of Breath of fire series, the dark backgrounds and stories combine with colourful, unique environment, large map, various place to travel, a mysterious adventure that you don't where it lead, remind you of the adventure of Odysseus that is direct by Tim Burton. This game is highly underrated. I doubt this game is for everybody especially with its limited graphic and music system, but if you seek for the story element instead of gameplaying and graphic, you may try this game, and the graphic is not as horrible as Lufia, don't worry! And I regard this game have a very strong and beautiful soundtrack (and that is quite relative statement)

3. Secret of Mana: :) I thought mostly old gamer that own snes know this games and already play it. There so many good and enjoyable part of this game, one of them is you can play this rpg together with your friends or partner! I think this is the only 2 player rpg that I ever know (the other is legend of mana, but the downside of legend of mana the 2nd player force to play varied character depend on the mission.)

Link to video.

4. Final Fantasy 6: peoples say this is the best of the final fantasy series.

Link to video.

5. Breath of Fire 1: not as good as breath of fire 2, I don't advise peoples to try this, but because I can't see other alternative for snes (I haven't play earthbound), so I put breath of fire 1 in the fifth of my list.

Playstation

1. Xenogear: despite of its content seem to be like highly effected with Nietzsche philosophy, and anti-God notion, but as a Muslims because we must also negate any type of God as we say "there is no Gods" then later on we say except Allah. So I thought if I see this games on trying to destroy the false God, as the axe of Abraham destroy groups of idols, on that view I thought this game just try to destroy the false God (idols) and btw I really like the game and soundtrack. Eventough I don't agree with many of the game content and philosophy but on the other side there other things that I found interesting.

Link to video.

2. Breath of Fire 3: not as good as breath of fire 2, but this is also one of the best game in playstation rpg.

Link to video.

3. Final Fantasy 7, lots of nostalgia, huge map, fun gameplay, nice graphic, interesting story but of course ff7 is not the best of PS rpg and highly overrated, but really really worth to try if you haven't play it yet.

Link to video.

4. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: I play this game a lots, the best series of Castlevania, and Alucard is not from the boring whip equipped Belmont family, that make it more interesting. And it have the best soundtrack of video game history, Michiru Yamame is awesome. If you haven't play it yet, try it!

Link to video.

5. Thousand arms: rpg mix with strong humour and dating system, well I spend lots of laughter in this J-RPG, if you really want to seek an rpg game that is colorful, fun, simple and funny in the same time, you can try thousand arms.

Link to video.

PC best 5 rpg.

1. Morrowind. Open map, you can do what ever you want and there is no restriction to kill any character and it still deliver you an ending, and many other aspects that make Morrowind probably one of the best rpg I ever play.

Link to video.

2. Oblivion: Oblivion with mods is not just a game, it is a work of art. Beautiful graphic and landscape, rich place to explore (far from being repetitive as peoples suggest, no not at all! you should try this game!) I even hardly decide which one better between Morrowind and Oblivion.

Link to video.

3. Knight of The Old republic. :) What can I say? one of the best game! (too tired to explain)

Link to video.

4. Mass effect 1 and 2: haven't play the third one yet, I heard it have terrible ending, so I don't want to try it and prepare myself to be disappointed in the ending execution. Ending is important part of the game, it is like a rewards after hours you spend time to win the game. (no need for trailer this game is highly popular in this forum)

5. Neverwinter Night: I try this game before I try Baldurgate, I can't really enjoy Baldurgate but I really really enjoy Neverwinter night and its expansion, also this game have many interesting character like the female heroine Aribeth.

I don't have ps2, ps3, xbox, etc, the only console I have were sega genesis, snes, and ps. My first encounter with rpg was on snes (secret of mana-the first time I force myself to learn English) so I can't make top5 rpg list in sega genesis.

edit: fix the youtube link also I like to mention other great/good games that I don't mention yet that have an rpg element in it? first is Mount and Blade warband, maybe MnB warband I can put it in number 3 list as a best game in pc (replacing knight of the old republic) but because is not entirely rpg I refrain myself to do it.

Also Front Mission 3 in PS, final fantasy tactic those are good games.

:)

Of the ones mentioned i have only played Secret of Mana, but it was excellent indeed.
Again in the Snes, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past was also good, although inferior to Secret of Mana. Both great games though.

I don't think i ever played a PC rpg.

That surprising, as you really interest with Japanese culture, anime and anime series, mostly it come in one package with being a video gamers especially when you own one of the best game console: SNES. It is so hard to imagine someone in your position resist the temptation from being a gamer.

If you want to play an rpg game, you should try Chrono Trigger once you have time, it is a good games Kyriakos, and you will see how it valid to play up until today.

For pc rpg, my first encountered with pc rpg was after I graduated from highschool so I not really fully knowledgable of pc rpg (even though I already play pc rpg like.. 12 year?) because I never actually play games like Ultima, Baldurgate, and other pc rpg legend.

I remember that time I promise to myself want to stop being a gamer and sold my tv and playstation. But not long after that I start to try rpg from pc :P since that time I never really quit from being a gamer. There positives and negatives side on that. For pc rpg, I recommend you to try Oblivion with the expansion Shivering Isles, you will find a game with a beautiful cinematography and absurd/quriky but deep story line, I think you gonna love Oblivion with Shivering Isles, try to watch it here:

I never play Zelda till finish, I don't own the game I tend to see my cousin play the game than actually play the game itself. If I ever play Zelda I'm sure it is on my top5 rpg list in snes.

Chrono Trigger was the best console RPG ever with FF 6 as a very close second as far as I am concerned. I did not own a console after the PS One and I might have missed some very good games, but even at the time I had the feeling that the FF series and the genre in general was letting itself go (despite some gems like Breath of Fire 3 and Final Fantasy Tactics).
I also have very fond memories of Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire 2, the games that introduced me to the genre. BoF 2 was one of the very few console RPGs released in Europe, but it wasn't translated into German and it actually helped me learn English (my English at that time was obviously not good enough to realize that the game's Japanese to English translation was rather dodgy) and promted me to get my hands on import versions of BoF 1, FF 6 and CT.

As for the PC games, I have to commit a heresy here and say that I enjoyed Skyrim far more han Morrowind. While Morrowind had more FREEDOM, it was also horribly unbalanced and I don't want to go back to an Elder crolls game without perks that let me customize my character with a sense of direction. I wouldn't even put Oblivion on that list. It was an OK game, but it's ruined by the worst level scaling seen this century and it somehow lacks the charm of Morrowind.
You should try Mass Effect 3. The actual gameplay is far better than ME 2 (which was already far better than ME 1) and the atmosphere is excellent. The game's only weaknesses are the character roster (many of my favourites only make guest appearances) and the final hour (and only the final ten minutes are really bad). Also, if you know that the endings are bad you won't be as enraged/disappointed as the people who finished the game without warning when it was new. You might even be relieved and think it's not as bad as it's reputation, and the extended cut really is an improvement. It is also one of the very few games that really engaged me emotionally and even made me cry (no, not about the ending).

Spoiler :

"I'm - the - ve-ry - mo-del of..."

"The answer to your question was "Yes"."

Avoiding the ending isn't worth missing out on all the great moments in Mass Effect 3.

I would also add Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and Alpha Protocol to the list. Both were bug ridden messes when they came out, but have become true masterpieces of the Deus Ex like sub-genre of story drive western RPGs in a modern setting (if you get Vampire you should download the unofficial patch).

Any tips on playing Vampire:The Masquerade? I picked it up on Steam sale but I just couldn't get into it. The combat felt mushy and the lack of quest markers or directions really antagonized me (and this is coming from a Morrowind/Baldur's Gate player).

Top RPGs for me:
1. Morrowind: Morrowind was the first RPG I truly played and it is still my favorite. Sure, many of the mechanics are dated or simply not very good, but it had a depth and charm that I haven't found in any other RPGs.
2. The Witcher: It was just a complete blast. The world was very well fleshed out, the game itself beautiful, the combat was fun and different, and even the most basic fetch quests were pretty cool. The only thing that knocks it down from the number 1 spot is the rather atrocious plot line and quests in Chapter 2.
3. Baldur's Gate: Although I didn't find the role-playing aspect as strong as in more open world games like Morrowind, the pretty slick D&D combat and the fun of managing your part, coupled with a decent enough story and some fun characters, I found it completely enjoyable. I also felt it was a better game than the 'Modern Sequel' of Dragon Age: Origins. While DAO was by no means a bad game, the plot felt way too formulaic, the maps too linear, too many 'herp derp plot twist!' moments, and Alistair annoyed me.
4. Mass Effect 2: I would have put ME1 on the list as I felt it had a slightly stronger plot, but I had to take it off due to the horrendous combat and pacing, plus Bioware being cruel and having enemies spawn within line of sight/too many zombie style enemies (the husks, the plant-zombies, etc). ME2 was a very slick game that for the most part avoided the Bioware problems of bad pacing and mediocre combat systems even if it was let down by an overall lackluster main plot.
5. Two Worlds: Two Worlds may not have been a particularly good game on release, but after some patches it is a very fun game where you can romp your way across a bright fantasy world slicing your way through orcs, zombies, bandits, evil mages, and whatever else that gets in your way while completing more quests than you could shake a stick at. Although in many respects the sequel is a better game, I actually rate it lower than Two Worlds. Two Worlds has the charm of a small release that was fighting far above its level while the sequel feels like a AAA release that just wasn't balanced or tested properly.

Honorable Mentions:
STALKER, Dragon Age Origins, Deus Ex (new and old), Inquisitor.

As for the PC games, I have to commit a heresy here and say that I enjoyed Skyrim far more han Morrowind. I wouldn't even put Oblivion on that list. It was an OK game, but it's ruined by the worst level scaling seen this century and it somehow lacks the charm of Morrowind.

I completely understand that, you are absolutely right that Skyrim have far more superior combat feature than its predecessor, especially Morrowind if you play as melee character the combat was completely out dated. However I'm more eager to repeat playing Morrowind than Skyrim, I never felt I reach the climax of my character and I not yet felt I explored the world of Morrowind and unreveal its secret, from the 3 elderscroll series that I played Skyrim is the only one that I played till the end of the game. While Morrowind and Oblivion I never finish the main quest, I was competely drawn myself to explore the maps, the side quest, building my characters until I end up sold my pc (because of outdated, in order to bought the new one) or until it broken, I play that game for years without ending. While Skyrim I easily developed my character and reach mostly everything that the game can offer me, and get bored and go directly focus on the main quest and finish the game. That is not at all to say that Skyrim is a bad game and a bad sequel, it just from all the good games there are the better one. But I fully understand why you chose Skyrim over Morrowind and Oblivion.

While Oblivion even though it don't have what Morrowind have like huge map, freedom to play, mysteries, but Oblivion world is beautiful, so colourful, and the mods development is just amazing. Many might disagree with me but Oblivion have very goods side quest also to explore, and quite unforgettable, like you enter to the work of a painter, that just one of many amazing side quest I can mention. And also the arena! And many more.

I agree with you, you really convinced me, however I lost my save game, is it such a huge lost if I start ME 3 without any save games from my previous ME2? I spend most of my time at ME2 to open many achievement and money. Do you have any suggestion?

Ajidica mentioned it in honourable mention, it is a good game, but unfortunately is not one of the 5 best game I ever play :(

Oh, so he did. I missed that, sorry. Still... it would be at the top of my list! ;)

1. Fallout 2
2. Morrowind
3. Dragon Age: Origins
4. KOTOR
5. Skyrim

No love for Planescape Torment?

Yeah, everyone who posted without that will go to gaming hell :yup:.

Can't specify 5, because most of the RPGs I've played were somehow good, and most of them in some way unique. Includes Planescape Torment, Fallout 1+2, Arcanum, Vampires 2, Gothic 1+2, Divinity 2, The Witcher, and probably some more (not Morrowind + Oblivion; no big fan of the Elder Scrolls).

But I have to say that I hate that I never really played any console RPGs.
Seems I've missed a lot in these regards.

In order from favorite to least favorite. I admit a bias for newer games (although not the newest as there has been a decline the past few years). It's very difficult to play older games once I've played and beat them. The graphics and gameplay just can't keep me going. Not to mention I know the story so well.

1. Fallout: New Vegas. No surprise here, I'm from Vegas. It has the good gameplay of the Bethesda engine, and good story telling from some of the original Fallout people. It's based on some of their work on Van Buren (the true Fallout 3). Lots of dialogue, lots of freedom, lots of choices. What's not to like? The DLC is step down, but still decent (I'm not rating dlc, just mentioning it).

2. Dragon Age: Origins. Fun gameplay. Not as many spells as Baldur's Gate 2 (although many spells I never used in that game because they were not useful), but the gameplay is the best Bioware has to offer (that I've played). A good mix of good storytelling, good gameplay, good rpg choices, and good action.

3. Baldur's Gate 1/2. I'm just going to say Baldur's gate 1 and 2 are a tie for me. I can't decide which I like more. 1 has good outdoor areas to explore which I like, and I like the lower level stuff too. It's a challenge until you get several levels under your belt. 2 has better variety of spells and stuff to play with.

4. The Witcher 1/2. Again I can't decide which I like more 1 or 2. So I'll say they are both a tie. 1 has a better story in my opinion, just not as good an engine to play the game. 2 is smoother, but perhaps they simplified things a little too much.

5. Fallout 2/1. Again another tie. Yes I realize this allows me to make my list 8 games instead of 5. :D Deal with it. Again I can't decide which I like better.

Honorable mention: Knights of the Old Republic. Good story. Just finished replaying it, I also had recently played brotherhood of shadow added content. Although it crashed in the caves during Solomon's revenge, but worth checking out.

I'm not mentioning mmorpg's. I don't consider them true rpg's, and are in a category of their own.

edit: second honorable mention: Planescape: Torment. Great story, it's just the gameplay is lacking for me. But definitely deserves mention. I like the story so much I named one of my characters in Star War: The Old Republic: Deionarra.

I haven't played that many rpgs, not many of these listed specifically. I own a lot of the lists I just haven't had time to play yet (baulder's gate, fallout series, divinity 2, witcher series). If we're listing zelda games that's a pretty broad rpg definition imo and I would exclude them. You don't really do any customizing of your character, they're action/adventure games to me. What about MMO RPGs? Cus world of warcraft is a really good game, or used to be. I guess I'll keep my list to offline games for now.

Anyway my list is short but it's:

1. Mass Effect 2
2. Dragon Age Origins
3. Skyrim
4. Final Fantasy 5 (Japanese release translated into English)
5. Fable the lost chapters

Mass effect 1 I didn't like that much. It's too open, there's too much rpg stat stuff going on, and the gameplay is clunky. Mass effect series gameplay is built around the cover system but in the first one it doesn't operate smoothly at all. I could never get into it.

2 however is a gem, one of my favorite games ever. The relationships you can cultivate really make it feel like you own your squad. The gameplay was tremendously improved over 1.

3 is also good, gameplay slightly improved. They added a roll mechanic and enabled all weapon types for any class, though with weight limitations. Carrying less weight reduces your ability cooldowns. Not necessarily better, just different. However the feel of the game is totally different from 2. I felt more pushed in a specific direction in 3. The end of the world hangs over everything in the story like a wet blanket. I just didn't feel as close a connection to my squad as I did in 2. Still a great game though.

Oblivion is a terrible game imo. Terrible leveling mechanics ruin the entire game for me, didn't like the graphics either. Everything wrong in oblivion they seemed to fix in skyrim though, from my point of view. I never played morrowwind.

Does dead space count as an rpg? Cus I loved 1 and 2. Probably an action game with a few rpg elements.

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the reasoning behind inclusion of Skyrim on a list of the top five RPGs of all time. The combat/gameplay is atrocious, the story/characters are terrible and forgettable, the quests tedious and uninspired ... I mean, those are the most important aspects of an RPG, and Skyrim is awful at all of them. And there are countless other things wrong with it, too. Compare Skyrim to good RPGs like Fallout: New Vegas and The Witcher 2, and it pales in comparison. (I will say, Skyrim's exploration is certainly better than TW2 and it doesn't have the annoying invisible walls of F:NV, but that's not really an important component of an RPG.)

1. Planescape: Torment
2. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
3. Deus Ex
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Chrono Trigger

And because I can't be satisfied stopping there, here's a rough ranking of every other RPG I can recall playing to completion.

Spoiler :
6. Fallout 2
7. Fallout
8. System Shock 2
9. Mass Effect 2
10. Final Fantasy Tactics
11. Baldur's Gate II
12. The Witcher 2
13. Mass Effect 3
14. Gothic II
15. Gothic
16. Final Fantasy IX
17. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
18. Ultima Underworld
19. Romancing Saga 3
20. The Witcher
21. Fallout: New Vegas
22. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
23. Dragon Age: Origins
24. STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
25. Final Fantasy IV
26. Fallout 3
27. Final Fantasy VIII
28. Final Fantasy X
29. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines
30. Mass Effect
31. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords
32. Mount & Blade
33. Final Fantasy V
34. Gothic 3

Morrowind
Fallout 2
Gothic 2
Planescape: Torment
Drakkhen (this one is really old but got my hooked by months)

This! You really speak loudly what I have inside me, I think you are the first person whom I see in the internet speaking like this, even though I don't agree with you regarding the battle system of course it is nicer than Oblivion and Morrowind, but I really agree with the rest of the point.

And yes Skyrim is so boring, the character is easily forgettable, the environment are so repetitive (everywhere look the same). As an Elderscroll appreciator I try so hard (years ago) to appreciate Skyrim and to convince myself that this game is enjoyable, but I can't, I even start to question myself "maybe I'm too old to play a game? maybe I should reconsider myself to stop playing game?" Because seeing how peoples celebrating Skyrim and how they praise and endorse this game even praise it over Morrowind and Oblivion, so it must be not the game who wrong here, but it is me.

I think the reason we don't find any review that try to review Skyrim as the way it is is because criticizing Skyrim become some kind like gaming community taboo just like praising Final Fantasy 7, it anger many gamers.
