Try-04: Lonely Civs and Bismarck the Builder

Working now, thanks.

My PC is beastly - I built it to play Age of Conan (ridiculously high requirements) - so I can run Civ on max settings no problem ;)

Preflight:
- Settle GSpy in Munich, can't really argue with that.
Spoiler :
t195-munich-gspy.jpg

- Remove spy specialist in Stuttgart, put it on the grass mine to build forge faster.
- 2 pop whip the temple in Dortmund.
Spoiler :
t195-whip-dortmund.jpg

Turn 196:
- Paper done, start Education
Spoiler :
t196-paper.jpg

- Found Dusseldorf on 'Filler City' spot, start monument->granary
- We get what could have been a *really* cool event, but not enough cash :(
Spoiler :
t196-event.jpg

Turn 197:
- Found Bremen at production site, start monument->granary

Turn 198:
- Trade with Pericles for Horseback Riding. Not 'cause we need it, just to get it and gain diplo.
Spoiler :
t198-per-trade-hbr.jpg

Turn 199:
- You guys won't believe this...
Spoiler :
t199-munich-ge4.jpg

- Munich finishes the Colosseum, nothing else to build really so I start a Caravel to protect it's seafood. I also maxed out the specialists it could run.

Turn 200:
- Spread Taoism to Burgundian (greek city)
- Berlin done with courthouse, start a settler

Turn 201:
- A list showing our greatness
Spoiler :
t201-list.jpg

Turn 202:
- Hamburg finishes this...
Spoiler :
t202-notre-dame.jpg

- Spread Taoism to Pharsalos (greek)
- And now that the wonder we were working on is done, I swap to Bureaucracy and Pacifism (only 1 turn anarchy) and nice enough, we don't have to do an additional switch for our state religion.
Spoiler :
t202-civic-switch.jpg

Turn 203:
- Another trade with Pericles, which makes him Pleased with us:
Spoiler :
t203-per-trade-mono.jpg

- Hinduism FIDL (Ramesses got it with Divine Right)

Turn 206:
- Killing the barb city
Spoiler :
t206-attack-barb.jpg

Turn 207:
- That job is done
Spoiler :
t207-raze-barb.jpg

Turn 208:
- This one too
Spoiler :
t208-edu.jpg

- Pericles comes calling, I agree
Spoiler :
t208-per-trade-map.jpg

Turn 209:
- Make a trade with Pericles, since he was only a few turns from teching it himself
Spoiler :
t209-per-trade-alpha.jpg

Turn 212:
- Played to here for a stopping point:
Spoiler :
t212-philo.jpg

- Shaka came a-calling...nope!
Spoiler :
t212-shaka-no-trade.jpg

- And our newest great person:
Spoiler :

- I queued Feudalism, feel free to change that.
- We have visibility of all AI tech choices, I have the EP allocated to hopefully maintain that. Charlemagne seems to be spending a lot of EP on us.

I had another thought, regarding city placement. Thinking ahead, we should plan a spot for the National Park, and that would be a good use for all those tundra forests, imo. Thus:
t212-dotmap.jpg

Nice turns Tryn. Good call about the NP city, I hadn't considered that, and it will come into play due to us needing to reach that era anyways, might as well plan for it.

It figures that we get 4 minority GEs when playing as Bismarck the Builder and not needing them!!! In hindsight, using the GE on Moai was not :smoke: at all since we are now drowning in them .

As for the GM, bank him for either Sushi or Cereal, IF we want to go the corporation route (don't know the chances of us getting another). Otherwise, send him to Greece for cash. I'm still waiting for us to pop a Great Prophet so we can build that shrine! Hopefully that will happen faster with Paci in effect.

BTW, with that civic up, we should not be building much more military unless the bad guys have Astro, since they can't get to us, and we're not going to be fighting them with our current selection of units anyways. I note that Sankore is up for grabs still, but with Ramesses on the map, and him discovering paper just 5 turns after us, it is likely a lost cause.

RE: the dotmap. I am not a huge fan of using pink dot to grab the whales, as they are a lousy resource at best, since they obsolete. However, if we are going for a National Park city, then it makes more sense because there's little point in cramping the BFCs so much.

I also feel that Yellow is not a good spot. Any city we build in the tundra MUST be coastal or it is utterly useless, as it will have no food whatsoever and will be stuck at size 3 max. The spot does pick up one riverside tundra square, but irrigated tundra squares are worse than coastal squares, and even post biology doesn't bring much tangible relief.

Off topic, but lol @ Hannibal and managing to lose a city (and access to his own continent it appears) to the barbs. He probably has barbs running amok on his continent (assuming a similar size to everyone else's continent), and it would be prudent to direct overseas expansion there (Hannibal is clearly gimped on a small peninsula and somehow cannot seem to run the barbs out of his own city). Seems there is a lot of jungle on the fat end of his continent and that just screams "cottages"!

I agree that pink is not the best city, but it does get the whales while we can use them :) Plus, moving it more inland would hog space from green (which is my planned NP site if you couldnt tell)

Yellow could go 1 SE for coastal, I was just trying to block land more than make a useful city :p

...yeah, Hannibal seems um...stuck

Something I forgot to mention - I think slavery is nearing its end as far as usefulness (whipping hurts more than it helps), and Caste would be nice to run more scientists (or merchants) in Munich rather than having to be limited by what buildings we have. So, we should feel free to use our current merchant for whatever (trade mission or golden age) and we can just run a bunch of merchants later to pop one for sushi

I don't think we'll get a prophet unless we get some more priests running - right now we can only run 1. Which doesn't seem to be hurting our Engineers, but hey. :crazyeye:

Good work. Can't believe we popped another GE! Use the GM for sushi.

Although the pink spot with the city is lame. It does give us a :) and we need all the :) we can get. I do like the idea of a NP city, which the green spot is good. where the cyan and yellow spots filler cities so no one else could get on the island?

I also think the time that slavery might be over. Caste will do us much better now. Also, I think running some priests In one of the cities hopefully will pop a GP for the shrine we need.

Ok Got it as if I read the roster correctly I am up.

Ralph

Yeah, pink is lame, but what can we do?

RE: Sushi vs Cereal, we should take a look at relative resource abundance first. I do think we have enough Sushi resources to make it more worthwhile, but it is always good to check.

Caste would be useful to milk an actual planned GP from Munich, however that GP won't be a Great Prophet unless lightning strikes again, since Caste won't let us run Priests (lame).

So a short quiet set (surprise surprise) but things are progressing nicely.
Research
After some thought Astronomy was our next priority due to a combination of factors (apologies for teaching Grandma to suck eggs; if I am !!)
  1. There is some nice land out there we might as well grab if we can.
  2. The overseas trade routes, with Pericles initially, will boost our economy and as they are non-reciprocal until the AI itself has Astronomy will pull us further ahead.
  3. We are getting health issues in some cities and the quickest way out will be to pick up Resource trades with the AI. Which will also boost our standing with them if we want to OB in the future.

The other competing priorities were Nationalism and Economics beeline for the good civic and free GM.

  1. Now Nationalism can wait, although we want the Taj, as the AI is nowhere near researching it yet and if it comes to a race we will win.
  2. On the other hand an AI with a strong gold preference may go for Economics and some have Feudalism already. However I judge that we should be able soon to trade for feudalism from Pericles and that we will have time to still win the race for economics after Astronomy.

Other things

Did the chain irrigation as marked. As has been pointed out not boosting farms like this is almost invariably a poor long term decision.

1chainirrig.jpg

Astronomy came in in 1555 but played an extra turn to see what GP we got.

1555Atro.jpg

Our Caravels have confirmed good land is available and found another island.

island.jpg

With Astronomy in did a generous trade with Pericles as we want to boost him up, which just happened to solve any heath / happiness gaps we might have.

peritrades.jpg

Did less generous trades with the AI to boost our economy.

othertrades.jpg

And yes we did pick up Feudalism from Pericles in a trade leaving this tech position

techs-2.jpg

And I still think we will win the economics race easily.

Ohh yes and are we a lucky team?? – well how does spawning a great Prophet sound!! I haven't "shrined" him yet but cant believe we dont want to.

scaryluck.jpg

Plans.

My views are
  1. beeline economics.
  2. Pick some overseas land to settle (Galleons + Settlers being built)
  3. Then go for the Taj
  4. As Bismarck the builder add in we must build a Colony and a Corporation to our self imposed VC’s.

Nice set there Ralph. Man, we have been riding on a Great Scientist at like 70% each time and we get something else. I should go out and buy a lottery ticket.

Good call about Astro. I notice that our formerly +1 commerce routes are mostly going at +4 now. Sweet stuff there.

We need to finish filling out our continent for sure. Hannibal is going for Astro in 11, although hopefully it's to unstick himself from his situation.

RE: Adding to our victory conditions. The corporations part is basically in the bag. With our insane tech rate (2x GNP of closest rival), we cannot be beat to a corporation that we want.

As for the colony. It really depends on if we want to build up a colony, or conquer some other poor civ completely and release them. We can basically build up Hannibal's continent if we want, but it will be a lot of work due to all that jungle that he never got around to clearing out.

For conquering... well... everyone except Genghis considers us their worst enemy (religion, sigh), so we could go with anyone really. Our power rating is horrendous right now though, so we'd definitely have to have an invasion plan (would almost certainly need to be rifles). Since we will need to build up to help Pericles destroy Khan anyways, we might as well pick a heavyweight like Egypt, since no one else really threatens our position. A colony would also add to our corporate bottom line later...

Oh, and the roster...

Looks good Ralph. at the prophet. Wow.

Question: Why do we need a colony for our variant?

Thoughts on next steps to help altonhare along?

Question: Why do we need a colony for our variant?

For no other reason than to have "built" everything that is available. So no good reason but it just feels consistent with our theme..

Ralph

everyone except Genghis considers us their worst enemy (religion, sigh),

This is a lot to do with the lack of AI to AI contact as Hannbal and Shaka have only just met....

Basically most of the AI have nobody else to hate but us so our Pariah status will reduce in the future when they know and dislike each other as an alternative to us.

Ralph

If we go for the colonies, it would definitely be after taking out Khan. We need to curry maximum favour with Pericles, and getting a colony would give us negative modifiers, so we want him on our team before we go about doing that.

Uh... well... It's been 3 days since altonhare officially reported his got it and he hasn't been seen around the forums since then.

This game seems to be stalling, does cripp want to pick it up, or should I grab it?
