TSG27 After Action Report

I don't know if i can feel comfortable with such tactics, you seemed to be always in negative income even in golden ages! Kudos for defending with litterally 1 archer only against hordes of AI units trying to catch your capital somewhere around turn 60 :goodjob:

Over 300 turns a game like this can begin to be won by the AI and sometimes even sooner. Cultural games are hardly won before turn 260, making last 40 turns very very tedious.

The nuked guy won :king:

I learned interesting things especially for the first policies and the Oracle gambit.

Research agreements are that good - it doesn't matter how much science you lose to negative GPT, you always come out ahead.

Yeah i understand, but do you really think that going into massive negative gpt is the right thing to do?

If i try to compare your games with some others(like tommynt), you seem to have a very personnal way to play this game, by entirely fueling your research with RAs(converting your science into gold), which is certainly the best thing to do, but what about ''emergencies''? Rush buying units? Gold for cs?

Your AI knowledge seems to be far superior than many of us, it certainly helps you to take more precise decisions, giving you the chance to play with fire a little more...

What if you can produce :c5gold: AND do everything else?

I don't know for me, but i still feel uncomfortable when i stay into negative income...i'm more an action/reaction guy, probably because i play a lot of mp games.

I like your vids, keep it up!

After watching several of those videos, I don't understand how you could have such a negative income with no cash and not have your units auto-deleted. Every time I've gone negative by even just a few gold and ran out my units all starting going poof.

If your raw science is higher than your (negative)gpt, you don't suffer from STRIKE.

I made it to the late 1800's.

I quickly built 4 cities, with Orleans furthest west with pearl and south of the mountain chokes.

China DOW'd me early, and would never take peace for less than everything I own. But they were at war with Germany most of the time, so they had no way to get to me.

Germany also DOW'd me, and after a while managed to overwhelm Orleans by amphibious assault. I saw it coming and was able to do a "Dunkirk" style evacuation. About 10 turns later I regroup, reinforce, and recapture Orleans. Too bad a lot of infra was gone.... that really hurt my culture progress.

I then did what turned out to be the best move of the game. I used a redundant GG to make the special building just south of the middle mountain. Bismark won't enter either pass because stopping next to it half kills them, and my ranged units finish the job. :D This was the first time I used a GG to make this building, and it worked so nicely I'll probably do it again. But it is VERY situational.

Eventually Bismark makes peace due to losing against China.

Eventually, China takes all Germany.

China won't enter the passes with rifles/infantry because my muskets/cannons + defense post scare them too much.

It all starts coming undone, though, when artillery arrives, and China can stay out of range and pepper my units. I can heal as fast as the damage is done, for about 30 turns, because she only uses one arty and still won't enter the pass. But then she gets a whole horde of them there, plus aircraft. My units die quickly. Orleans 1t from falling, I offer her Orleans for peace... what will make this deal work? A bunch of resources, all my cash, and all my gpt. Fine... even though I know its temporary, since shes at war with everyone else and is going for conquest.

The peace lasts quite a while... at least 30 turns. When Paris falls, the first UN vote is 5 turns away, and I am planning to vote for Siam and try to lose before being conquered. Saladin only has 3 SS parts left to build, but I can't count on much help there. Anyhow.... China rolls over my last two cities with one turn left for a vote that I would try to lose. I guess it doesn't matter in the end how you lose... but its good to have goals.

I hated the combat graphics, especially the bombers, which takes so much time. I finally got incentive to follow the instructions for changing my .ini file, so next time I should be able to lose much faster.

This was my first Deity game ever. I was expecting it to be a quick loss, but found that it was not so bad. I think a good player could have won culturally from my position. That's some consolation. :p

Game: Civ5 GOTM 27
Date submitted: 2012-01-27
Game status: Conquest Loss
Game date: 1360AD
Turns played:196
Base score:182
Final score:182

Never really got off the ground. Saw how close Hiawatha's capital was and thought it might make a slick second city so i rushed Iron Working and planned to bum-rush him, but got interrupted by China's early war declaration and spent the rest of the game with a single city on the defensive...fail.

And yes...this was my ACTUAL Game 27...thanks guys ;)

Having only gotten to where I can win about 1/3 if the time on Emperor (usually Culture or Science), I knew Deity would be tough. However, I did not realize how tough. I had a team out exploring and finished Stonehenge and was working on Oracle, when the neighbors started to complain. After losing my last explorer by turn 70 and seeing about 15 swords/cats/archers along with Germany's DoW and about half of that with Arabia's DoW during the same turn, I decided to take the fun way out and fire up the Tuner to give me 12 Mechanical Infantry with 2000 XP each and 20000 Gold. Unfortunately no matter how "fun" it was to deliver retribution for the unprovoked agression -- I am a peaceful explorer type -- it did not give me amy clues on sucking less at this level.

Can one of the winners in this GotM please provide a post that goes into extreme detail on the procedures to do less badly on this Deity game.

I am going to try it again. (Not usually masochistic, but I might learn something.)

:thanx: Monthar.

Just a note, please load the autosave, make a regular save and then submit that save. I think I remember Alan telling me something about trying not to upload autosaves as the format is a bit different and it will sometimes cause an error message from the submission system.

Sorry, I only just noticed this. I think leif is harking back to the days of Civ3. Autosaves from Civ3 are not compressed, so they would normally exceed the 2 MBytes file upload limit that used to exist on the servers. Since then, two things have happened

- Civ4 and Civ5 autosaves are no different from manual saves from those games, they are both equally compressed.

- Civ5 saves have become much bigger anyway, so we have had to increase upload file size limits anyway.

So the bottom line is, you should be able to submit an autosave from Civ5 (or from Civ4) with no problems.

oh aye....

maybe i skimmed this thread too fast... but one poster is noticable by his absence... where is our favourite agressive poster Tommy?

It seems I can no longer submit files, but I lost on turn 287, when the Iroquois won a diplomatic victory, with a score of 500. Bismarck declared war on me around turn 40, and continued attacking me for the rest of the game. By turn 199 he had aircraft and on turn 239 he nuked Paris, which fell on turn 244. It seems fairly remarkable that the game continued for another 43 turns after that. I just managed to clear Tradition, Liberty and Piety, with the Freedom opener, and I just managed to tech to Mass Media (which was pretty pointless by that stage).

Sorry, once we are past the closing date, the submissions system will no longer accept entries.

Glad you took the challenge. :goodjob:

Having looked briefly at Dave McW's winning strategy, I didn't think I would ever have the patience/time/insight to eke out a Deity cultural victory on standard settings. However, thirsting for revenge, I restarted and tried out the Stealth Bomber domination strategy described by Snarzberry and Wainy on these forums. I knew the basic map layout and likely AI dynamic, although I hadn't taken note of the annoying oil/aluminium disposition. Using a 3-city NC start with fairly aggressive city placement, I backfilled a further 3 cities and used RA/GS to beeline stealth (turn 195) whilst beating back Bismarck at the well-remembered choke points from my failed culture attempt. My fleet of stealth bombers ripped through old tormentors like modern-era keshiks:- a very therapeutic CiV session. To ice the cake and settle old scores, I nuked Bismarck on the final turn before taking the Siamese capital!

A second-hand victory perhaps, but very satisfying in the end. Who needs culture?
