I made it to the late 1800's.
I quickly built 4 cities, with Orleans furthest west with pearl and south of the mountain chokes.
China DOW'd me early, and would never take peace for less than everything I own. But they were at war with Germany most of the time, so they had no way to get to me.
Germany also DOW'd me, and after a while managed to overwhelm Orleans by amphibious assault. I saw it coming and was able to do a "Dunkirk" style evacuation. About 10 turns later I regroup, reinforce, and recapture Orleans. Too bad a lot of infra was gone.... that really hurt my culture progress.
I then did what turned out to be the
best move of the game. I used a redundant GG to make the special building just south of the middle mountain. Bismark won't enter either pass because stopping next to it half kills them, and my ranged units finish the job.

This was the first time I used a GG to make this building, and it worked so nicely I'll probably do it again. But it is VERY situational.
Eventually Bismark makes peace due to losing against China.
Eventually, China takes all Germany.
China won't enter the passes with rifles/infantry because my muskets/cannons + defense post scare them too much.
It all starts coming undone, though, when artillery arrives, and China can stay out of range and pepper my units. I can heal as fast as the damage is done, for about 30 turns, because she only uses one arty and still won't enter the pass. But then she gets a whole horde of them there, plus aircraft. My units die quickly. Orleans 1t from falling, I offer her Orleans for peace... what will make this deal work? A bunch of resources, all my cash, and all my gpt. Fine... even though I know its temporary, since shes at war with everyone else and is going for conquest.
The peace lasts quite a while... at least 30 turns. When Paris falls, the first UN vote is 5 turns away, and I am planning to vote for Siam and try to lose before being conquered. Saladin only has 3 SS parts left to build, but I can't count on much help there. Anyhow.... China rolls over my last two cities with one turn left for a vote that I would try to lose. I guess it doesn't matter in the end how you lose... but its good to have goals.
I hated the combat graphics, especially the bombers, which takes so much time. I finally got incentive to follow the instructions for changing my .ini file, so next time I should be able to lose much faster.
This was my first Deity game ever. I was expecting it to be a quick loss, but found that it was not so bad. I think a good player could have won culturally from my position. That's some consolation.
