The key is permissiveness. Let each other do whatever they want, and don't be possessive at all. If your girlfriend walks in with a condom on her head, you may want to ask a few questions. If your boyfriend is caught sending love letters to another woman or is picking up girls from the club, again you might want to have a talk with him. But otherwise, let each other be.
 
the happiest relationship i have been in ever was one where we were brutally honest with each other, which led to us being ourselves, which led to commitment, so i would say honesty.
