Ugliest city in the world?

Washington DC. The city center is okay, but is is surrounded by slums. It's awful. It's really a disgrace that we can't even serve the people in our capital.

Those slums have a name, and it's "Anacostia". Also, "Maryland". :mischief:

Any city that retains only or mostly soviet-style buildings is probably among the ugliest cities.

Exactly. You haven't seen gray until you've seen that.

Imagine a 4 km-long chain of identical, cubic gray blocs with little or no vegetation around.

Here is a quick glance at the style of those buildings:

The first and last are actually from my city. Would you not hate having those monstruousities in your city?
^ The other ones are NOT. Got it?

Have all old Warsaw Pact cities have that same treatment or is Romania worse/better then others?

In my own country:
The old 19th century industrial centres like Charleroi and Liege (the center is ok, but the suburbs...)

from the place Ive been to abroad: Chongqin in central china: just an ugly collection of tower buildings, combined with two dirty rivers and lots of smog

Detroit was actually quite ok, but I only visited the northern suburbs (like Troy) and stayed well away from 8 Mile... (as adviced by my colleagues)

It was certainly worse than most - but probably not the very worst. I've seen pictures that shook my insides...

Anyway, soviet architecture in the core of the Soviet Union for example can actually be beautiful, unlike its counterparts in the Warsaw pact.

For my city, it was a combination of:
1) Communism
2) having something to lose (i.e. the place had a history, an amazing old center, so there was something to lose, unlike smaller cities which might not have had so much)
3) an insane, grandomaniac, paranoic dictator for life.

The result? Around half of the city being converted into the kind of thing you see above (well... I admit, those pics are clearly worse than average, but still). If I had the money I'd rebuild it all somewhere out of the city, preferably near a green area, like we have in the eastern part of it right now, exactly identical to how it used to be before the disastrous communist years happened, and make it completely a pedestrian area, with parks, restaurants, cafes, museums, etc. And cover the communist blocs with paintings and sculptures, ENTIRELY. Make it all a living museum of art triumphing over monotony. Of course, that would make me an insane grandomaniac dictator too, unless I had Dubai-like money at hand. :p

Detroit.

A city full of rats, ran by rats. Atleast Kwame is gone...Cockrell seems ok.

:rolleyes:We wish, believe me dude. I'm so thankful that I live in a nice 'burb.

Cockrell just got his ass handed to him by the city council, meaning that the already weak mayor will get even WEAKER, which is the REVERSE of what the city needs; the lack of any one person to maintain strong leadership means that the city is destined for ruin.

Quite, a few pictures of soviet era buildings in Tallinn, Estonia:

Not as ugly as those in Mirc's pictures tho ( i think the dirt and those "custom" thingies in balconies/windows make them look uglier, but that probably happened during the 90's)
...

Some how, by some mircale, in another part of the city, they managed to make something quite pretty with bunch of such buildings:

Edit: and ugliest imho is whatever city that has the building on 3rd picture of Mirc's post ( #125 )

Ugliest cities in the world surely must exist in Africa or Mexico or some Asian craphole. Not in Missouri or Ontario or Denmark! :)

You realize though that only half of those pictures were even from this continent, right?

The one with the balconies has nothing to do with Romania.

Edit: annd Bucharest seems like a candidate for the ugliest city imho , judging from that picture. havent been around much

Its not just Warsaw Pact countries that built crappy soviet style housing:

Dublin City Council were worried that the Eastern Europeans would take the title of ugliest city away from us so they had to do something.

I live in one of these Commie-style blocks, and it's not nearly as bad.

1) the block I live in is actually situated on a hill, so I have a pretty good view from my apartnment
2) there are forests all around, a lot of tourist routes, plenty of places to go cycling
3) there is a dam lake close
4) it's far from city center, but not too far (about 30 minutes tramway ride)
5) most of the commie-style buildings are now being repaired and painted and I was pleasantly surprised that with a litte effort, they don't look that bad.
