Ultimate Civ Tourny!!

Here is my view : like the game of Risk, and like life itself, a Civilization MP game will be filled with treachory, bribery, sneaky players and underhanded tactics. This is part of the fun of it.

I too was betrayed, Mignonne, by Rommel, no warning, just a sneak attack. But I don't get mad, I get even, this is a good excuse to expand my empire a bit :D

Personally, I will honor my alliances and not do any sneak attacks but one must be prepared for this type of thing. I hope you decide to continue the game, but please keep in mind, Civ II is a wargame as well as a negotiations game and like real life it is not perfect.

ok, sure... it's not about betrayal... if sean would have betrayed me i wouldnt have made a sound about this... this is an mp game with basically "steady" players... all i ask is that subs honor their "steady" players agreements... that's it... i never asked for perfection...

I agree with Narz, the game is designed to include all the things that exist in real life - treachory, bribery and lying.... So why shouldn't we use these things.

I too plan to honour all my agreements and would hope that others would do the same but if this isn't the case, who cares!

To be very fair, I'd have to take full responsibility for my civ, even when lead by AI. I take some. Of course I can't reverse those actions, and must make the best of them. The difference is: no hard feelings.:)

In real life there are cheaters, but THIS IS A GAME NOT LIFE. It's no fun if we can't have fair play, and a climate of trust which goes beyond what you see in the real world.

Victory, for me, is everyone wanting me to play again. If I can pulverize other players on the map so they enjoy the process, everyone's happy.:D

As far as I know, there is no way to cheat in a Civ II multiplayer game. If anyone is caught cheating however, they will be banned from the game!

However, treachory, bribery, breaking treaties is NOT cheating, its part of the game. Like I said I will play fairly and I hope everyone else will too. Those who betray me will feel my wrath :vampire: and those who deal with me with consideration (and possibly reverence :D ) will be treated as allies and held the in the highest possible esteem.

Part of the fun of a multiplayer game is the interactions, both peaceful and hostile, between the players, there is no reason to take anything personally, it is simply a game (albeit, the best out there) and win or lose I'm going to enjoy it. :goodjob:

Narz, unfortunately MANY ways to cheat, but they are easily seen.

I save periodically and then check the saves after the session to see if anyone is doing something silly. I didn't check this games saves, only because the game is an ongoing thing, and me seeing the map for example would not be fair.

There is a level of trust involved in ANY online game, but with turn based games, it's a special one, due to the diplomacy involved with games like the one you guys are playing. Later in the game, there will be war, and people's feelings will get hurt.

One suggestion that I would make to you before you get into the later ages would be to limit the number of cities that a person can take from a civ in one turn. This eliminates the possibility of one person building up and wiping out another Civ in one turn. And it gives the attacked Civ a chance to counterattack (Which is great fun BTW).

it is rather obvious that i couldnt bring across my point... and also, im sure some will gladly take over and play the spanish in my place... good luck to everyone and enjoy...

I should really read the posts more often. LOL. The bottom line as I see it is this......everyone has their own set of scruples. Such is the HUMAN (not AI) condition. Everyone playing this game is smart enough to realize this going in. It is a damn shame that there has to be hard feelings regarding the way HUMANS play this game. But, Mignonne, in all fairness, I warned you about how HUMANS play this game. NONE ARE TO BE TRUSTED!! LOL.

I expect everyone to do whatever they can to win, within the game framework. Our problem now is defining (in progress!) just what lies outside the proper game framework. Some of us, for example, assumed bribery was OUT, others assumed IN. We have to agree on these sorts of things NOW, before everyone gets upset and we end up arguing about who abused the game flaws and loopholes most.

I like this proposal: (Mignonne)"any HUMAN subs should honor their civilizations' prior agreements with others from now on... unless when indeed taken over by A.I. of course... agreements which will be posted such as sean did (and i am sure HE would have KEPT his word)... is that cool with all of ya?"

If a player can't make a week, that player will try to find -and privately brief- a substitute, otherwise, commitments, pacts, general stategies, etc. will be posted so a drop-in sub can maintain them. Subs will try to follow through on the previous players' initiatives, but remain open and flexible to changes in the game.

Everyone OK with this?

See you later, Mignonne.

Here is the usual writeup and screenshots of the game in case anyone is interested : http://www.narcity.com/fun/civ/ultimate/week6.html

I for one, don't believe we need a code of laws in order to play fairly. The only obvious rule is don't look at anyone else's save but your own. This goes without saying. Anything else goes, bribery is part of the game, if you can't handle it I suggest you research and switch to Democracy as soon as it becomes available.

If someone breaks a treaty with you, treat them ruthlessly (and certainly don't sign another treaty). If someone bribes your city, bribe them back, or keep some attack units near your cities to snack on greedy diplomats.

I am looking forward to Sunday, c-yall soon!

I could not agree with Narz any more than if I had written his post myself. We certainly do not need a code of laws to do this. I myself HATE city bribe as a tactic, but he is right when he says that it is part of the game. No bribes would have had to be agreed upon at the beginning of the game, not in mid stride. As this is our first run, there will be problems and disagreements. But I am sure we can work through them all, and learn for the next time out. And Mignonne.....rejoin the game....please...

Where is everyone? I'll be on ICQ and AOL waiting, its 12:55pm. If any random threadhoppers want to join (in case we don't get 7 players) contact me : ICQ#162893046
