I think for a Civil War scenario, there should be a few of these at the outset, and this will be the only buildable cannon since the smooth-bore cannon is obsolete.
But there should be a number of smooth-bore cannon at the beginning. I think it'd be good if somebody made a munit of the vanilla Civ Cannon with the Rifleman for this purpose.
Dom, I'm making some more cannons from the ACW-era
- 3 inch ordnance rifle
- 6 pounder bronze smoothbore
and I'm going to try also
- 1.65 inch Hotchkiss mountain gun and
- gatling gun (btw, was that used in artillerish or infantryish manner? or - how should it be used in civ3?)
The Gatling gun wasn't used at all actually... but there was something called a Coffe Mill gun that was indeed used, but it only had one barrel. It had a tendency to over-heat though.
I would suggest using the Gatling gun as either A) artillery or B) high-defense ground unit with a defensive bombardment.
At this time, they were still using these sorts of weapon as artillery eventhough this really wasn't their best use.
I believe some of the first Gatling guns were invented during the American civil war, or shortly after it. Anyway these guns were used in a defensive manner similar to a modern machine gun.
Panzer_Blitz, the patent for the Gatling gun was approved late in 1862, but the gun actually saw little or no combat in spite of the fact that Ben Butler personally bought a number of them for use at Petersburg. One of the reasons for this was Gatling's questionable loyalties as he also tried to sell this to the CSA as well.
