"Unit Request Tournament" hosted by utahjazz7

I warms my little techno heart to see all these sci-fi unit requests. All entries are lookin' like pretty good units. Only two hours til it closes! (here).

How about a unit for my 1632 series mod.
An APC type truck carrying shotgun wielding southerners in the back that attacks by having men jump out and blow off the shotguns. It also has a gun mount so that it can both transport units faster and then unload the units so they can attack too.

Submission Deadline

Well, that was that. The deadline for submitting requests has now come and gone. I would like to thank everyone who submitted a unit. It's nice to see some new requests and concept images, which I otherwise would not have been exposed to . . . and of course, there are the standing requests, too. ;)

Setting the Field
Over the next day or two, depending on how things go time-wise, I will select the requests to be included in the tournament field. I won't give a definite number right now, but based on the number of units requested, I would expect that the number of requests making the tournament to be around 16-20.

Tournament Format
I've decided to use the World Cup format for this tournament. All of the requests making the field will be assigned to a group--the number of groups and the number of teams per group has not yet been determined.

Once the groups are set up, each request will play against all other requests in its group. For each matchup, both requests will be assigned a random number between 1 and 6. The winning request will receive 3 points. In the case of a tie, both teams will receive 1 point.

After all requests in a group have played against agains all the other requests in the same group, the top two teams from that group will move on to the single-elimination stage of the tournament. If there is a tie for who moves on, the first tie-breaker will be head-to-head, then random points in all matchups, then a one game playoff.

The teams moving on to the single-elimination stage will be organized into a traditional tournament bracket, and things will proceed as they did with last year's unit request tournament.

Post Away
Thank you, almost everyone ;), for not making multiple posts in this thread until this point. It makes it much easier to go through the posts to see all of the requests. I would not want to miss one accidentally.

At this point, feel free to post. You won't be disqualified from the tournament.

I always have trouble picking who to root for in a tournament. 8 of these units would be helpful in an Indian mod:

Directly Indian or related cultures:
  • Indian Chariot (Ratha)
  • Indian Medieval Horseman
  • Raksasa
  • Khmer/Siamese War Elephant
Usable without changes:
  • T'ang Yóuxiá
  • Parthian horse archer
  • Sudanese Lancer
Would work fine with a simple helmet change:
  • Iberian Caetrati with falcata / khukri

If they all get into the first round that's 8 out of 16-20 chances. :crazyeye:

:coffee:

I vote for the Indian Chariot too. Anything else can be proxied till the time is right, but the Ratha is too unique.

Thanks again for hosting the tournament; I think that about half of the requests made would fit well in my next mod :).

I just came to wish everyone luck in the tournament and thank utah for putting this together :)

Woohoo!

I could go for either my request or a subcontinental Indian chariot (ratha or not). If I hope for more than one, I double my chances of satsifaction?

I'd like either the Tang Youxia or the Indian Chariot.

Grouping Format
20 unit requests have been included in the tournament. In the next day or so, they will be divided into four groups of five requests. Each of the five requests in each group will play against the other four requests in the group. After the games are complete, the top two requests from each group will move on to the single-elimination stage.

The 1st place request from Group 1 will face the 2nd place request from Group 4. The 1st place request from Group 2 will face the 2nd place request from Group 3. The two winners will meet to determine who reaches the finals.

The 1st place request from Group 3 will face the 2nd place request from Group 2. The 1st place request from Group 4 will face the 2nd place request from Group 1. The two winners will meet to determine who reaches the finals.

Schedule
Here is the schedule for the group stage of the tournament; results will not necessarily be posted daily. Because there is an odd number of requests in each group, one request will have a bye on each day. I know it’s not ideal to have requests idle while others are playing, but this allows for a field of 20 requests as opposed to 16.

Day 1
1 vs. 2
3 vs. 4

Day 2
1 vs. 3
2 vs. 5

Day 3
1 vs. 5
2 vs. 4

Day 4
1 vs. 4
3 vs. 5

Day 5
2 vs. 3
4 vs. 5

"Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bug-hunt?" - Private William Hudson :p

Well, looks like one sci-fi unit made it. All you sci-fiers out there better rally behind the Space Marine, or we'll get another javelin-guy.;) Nothing against him, really, but I would like to see something slightly different than just another guy with a spear or on a horse...
