Hmm... while nothing is set in stone just yet, there's a lot of building speculation based on various coincidences that have been popping up lately. What is the speculation with regards to, you may ask?
A new Crash Bandicoot game.
Let us discuss the various incidents that are leading to the idea.
First and foremost, despite Sony no longer holding the rights to Crash, it seems strange they threw him into their latest advertisement.
They included Crash on a signpost. While it looks to possibly be just an easter egg, look more closely at the signpost; Crash is shown, with an arrow above him pointing to a yellow diamond, the symbol of Sony. Possibly a message of Crash being returned to Sony? Between the rancor that resulted from his not being included in Playstation All Stars Battle Royale, and the fact Activision has shown itself to be more interested in squatting on Crash than actually using him for anything, it's not entirely crazy to think Sony might have re-acquired him.
Minor cosmetic detail, but they (Sony) were apparently playing Crash music at E3 this year. Seems strange they'd do so when Activision holds the cards on that front, no?
Now here's where things get weird. Activision's site for Crash Bandicoot went down today. All references to Crash Bandicoot are gone from Activision's website, showing it's more than just a site outage. This is despite Activision having
renewed the trademark on Crash just a month ago. Rather weird that they'd keep his rights, then just erase him from existence, isn't it? It seems like the sort of denial companies like SEGA participate in before they're ready to make a formal announcement. Even so, if it was Activision about to make a new Crash game, logic would dictate they'd still keep the site up and display what is (was?) their IP.
Perhaps it's all just coincidence, but things are starting to look shaky. Activision certainly would have no reason to keep Crash given they haven't done much with him, and the behavior on their part and Sony's alike are rather odd. Either way, the recent shaking up of things has certainly caught the attention of old school gamers. In an era where Rayman, Sly Cooper, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Sonic the Hedgehog and other platformers seem to be slowly returning to prominence, could Crash possibly join the fray as well...?
It goes without saying I'm optimistic, as much as my gut tells me not to board the hype train, how about you guys?
