Upcoming Games

"Multi-user Online Battle Arena" is an awful name for a genre anyway, since by itself it is so vague it applies to nearly any MP game.

But is a 'battle arena'. That's very descript. It is some-what distinct from say team deathmatch.

I'm really, liek nearly all multiplayer games are some form of deathmatch/team-deathmatch with additional features.

The main problem with throwing in action-RPG is there is near zero role-playing involved. People aren't like yelling at a game-master---"i search the room for hidden doors" and stuff. They're not writing back-story neither. They're just micromanaging abilities.

it could be called---mouse-click hell micromanagement, violent cartoon scored by killing buildings and things, I suppose.

I thought RPG was code for anything that has leveling up and abilities now.

I asked the devs of Unclaimed world a facebook question.

Hi. Any news on where this is at development wise now? Just a smidgen of info would be nice...

They said

Yep, it's going fast now. it's only smaller touchups and bug fixes. the interface is understandable now so next week the game will be played by a couple of new testers. I know we haven't made a lot of noise lately, it's simply because we're focusing everything on development... talk to you soon!

Which is nice.

Sorta but there's no way a MOBA style game fits any RPG definition because the matches are extremely limited and then you start all over. Your character progression is not persistent at all and I think that's an important distinction. Action rpgs like diablo or torchlight might be short and shallow without any real roleplay but you at least keep your progression on the character.

I was being sarcastic.

After a brief stop in the XCOM thread to drop some gentle sarcasm I remembered about a game called Xenonauts. It basically looks like a more faithful "reimagining" of UFO: Enemy Unknown than Firaxis XCOM. Looks pretty good IMO.

EDIT: In fact like MANY other games you can buy it as an Alpha on Steam already. Its £14.99

any of you guys play world of warcraft ?

Hmm... while nothing is set in stone just yet, there's a lot of building speculation based on various coincidences that have been popping up lately. What is the speculation with regards to, you may ask?

A new Crash Bandicoot game.

Let us discuss the various incidents that are leading to the idea.

First and foremost, despite Sony no longer holding the rights to Crash, it seems strange they threw him into their latest advertisement. They included Crash on a signpost. While it looks to possibly be just an easter egg, look more closely at the signpost; Crash is shown, with an arrow above him pointing to a yellow diamond, the symbol of Sony. Possibly a message of Crash being returned to Sony? Between the rancor that resulted from his not being included in Playstation All Stars Battle Royale, and the fact Activision has shown itself to be more interested in squatting on Crash than actually using him for anything, it's not entirely crazy to think Sony might have re-acquired him.

Minor cosmetic detail, but they (Sony) were apparently playing Crash music at E3 this year. Seems strange they'd do so when Activision holds the cards on that front, no?

Now here's where things get weird. Activision's site for Crash Bandicoot went down today. All references to Crash Bandicoot are gone from Activision's website, showing it's more than just a site outage. This is despite Activision having renewed the trademark on Crash just a month ago. Rather weird that they'd keep his rights, then just erase him from existence, isn't it? It seems like the sort of denial companies like SEGA participate in before they're ready to make a formal announcement. Even so, if it was Activision about to make a new Crash game, logic would dictate they'd still keep the site up and display what is (was?) their IP.

Perhaps it's all just coincidence, but things are starting to look shaky. Activision certainly would have no reason to keep Crash given they haven't done much with him, and the behavior on their part and Sony's alike are rather odd. Either way, the recent shaking up of things has certainly caught the attention of old school gamers. In an era where Rayman, Sly Cooper, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Sonic the Hedgehog and other platformers seem to be slowly returning to prominence, could Crash possibly join the fray as well...?

It goes without saying I'm optimistic, as much as my gut tells me not to board the hype train, how about you guys? :p

I miss the Crash games 1-3 and the racing game. The first. Everything beyond those games has basically sucked. If they return to that standard, I might consider bothering. :p

Another upcoming game is StoneHearth "inspired by the great Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft" http://stonehearth.net/

Very cool looking, and from what I glean will allow for city/base management and combat......

I am loving all of the "Dwarf Fortress" inspired games, if they can do half of what Toady's done, they will be worth it !

Sadly release date is Winter 2014

A free to play king's bounty legions just came out. Idk how similar it is to king's bounty the legend. It looks like it might be more tactics, small battle based, less story.

So...any good strategy game to be released soonish?

(apart from AOWIII which i most probably will never play).

The Eldritch Horror demands you play AOW3... All other strategy games have been cancelled so their developers can have more time to play AOW3. ;)

Can you say Magna Mundi?

Paradox have announced that what was supposed to be a Q1 release (as I understood it) of East v West will now be a FREE beta in march. This is part of what they say:
The scope of EvW is being reduced a little bit, you may have heard that some specific features are on hold while BL Logic focuses on the more integral parts of the game, and we agree with the devs that this is in the best interest of the game. As the game continues to improve, we may still decide to release it as a commercial product. Until then, though, a release date for EvW is not currently on our schedule. However, you'll all still be able to play the game in its beta form and support the devs with either your feedback here in the forums, monetarily, or both.

Rest of the post is here.

So not so much of an upcoming game but more of a maybe not upcoming game.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a different note the devs of Unclaimed World have announced a demo is coming soon.

Not really Magna Mundi, given it doesn't look like the game development'll end in a fiery lawsuit.

Development schedule permitting, East vs. West will be in beta come March and you will be able to contribute with what you want to get access to it.

Early Access on Steam maybe? If the game is in beta, but plays like an alpha, that would be a bad sign.
