Upcoming Patch Info

Thanks for the update!

I'm actually surprised. From my view, a delay would have been the norm, so the fact that they're already working on it and are trying for a simultaneous release comes as a pleasant surprise!

The fact that they are working on a simultaneous release specifically to facilitate cross platform multiplayer games, should prove that they do care about MP.

code speak for: the new patch fixes most/all of the old problems, but breaks other aspects of the game/causes hardware conflicts/etc. Not at all unusual for a large patch.

Aspyr only speaks for the mac and Linux versions though. They don't speak for Firaxis.

Just want to point out that Aspyr has no involvement in the patch on PC, which is obviously being handled by Firaxis itself. And Aspyr's statement does not imply Firaxis is having issues with the patch on PC, nor does it mean that the patch will be delayed.

In short, Aspyr is - and I should clarify that I'm in the dark about Aspyr's work as much as you guys are, since they're the publisher on Mac/Linux - working on adapting the patch for Mac and hopes to have it ready alongside the PC patch. Sounds like worst case scenario is the patch will drop on Mac a little later than PC.

Phew, ok, that's good to hear. Didn't know what Aspyr's role was in this until now. I'd be sad about a delay to the linux patch, but yaay dual boot. :D

So can someone maybe summerize what we already know about the notes and release date? Thank you! :)

Preliminary patch notes are in the first post. ;)

Release date is unknown but presumably soon-ish.

Lots of stuff is being changed...from virtues, to trade routes, to certain leader's traits, to certain seeding options, to health etc. It seems as if every system is being touched in the patch.

However, there are almost no specifics. We know a 'completed' section is being added to the production UI. We know Brazillia, FI, SF, PAU are getting changes, (can you guess who's getting nerfed and who's getting buffed?) but how exactly, we don't know.

The patch is releasing soon. How soon? Sooner than it was when they first announced it several weeks ago. We don't have an exact date but current expectation is this year. That expectation is based on nothing however.

So the patch only needs to be ported and they still didn't release the explicit patch notes?! Wow... okay... I wonder why they chose to keep them a secret.
Thanks for the answers though!

I haven't heard it only needs to be ported. I presume they won't have specifics until they're finished with it.

Really? I take it you haven't been reading the forums lately? I fully expect total meltdown once the patch hits, whatever it does.

I would add that we also know that Aspyr is hoping to release the MAC version of the patch at the same time as the PC version but that the MAC version of the patch is currently not working correctly.

I know it's almost impossible to say a concrete release date and hold to it, but I would love it if they at least said that the patch WON'T be done before X, and then keep that updated. It's just frustrating that 'soon' is a completely useless quantifier for the time frame.

Yeah, and I know that still creates the mindset of "You said it would be done by X."

Given that the patch seems to be taking forever, what would you change in certain areas?

We know Rejinaldo, Koslov, Barre and Elodie are all getting changes.

Rejinaldo definitely needs to be stronger militarily. +10% melee combat is very weak - maybe give him more bonuses, all geared towards military? 10% cheaper unit maintenance and production on top of his current bonus?

Koslov suffers from one bonus that's terrible and one bonus that's amazing. People basically only take him for a free tech. Maybe he should start off being able to build any kind of satellite? He would still need the resources required for them.

Barre's bonus is tricky since health is being revamped. Maybe just make it 10% faster growth all the time? That way at least you can't screw yourself out of it.

I'm not sure what they'll do with Elodie. It feels like giving her a tech bonus for having lots of culture is a bit backwards - shouldn't she be getting more culture as her unique ability? She's a culture freak after all - not a scientist. Maybe she could get a free virtue every X virtues, or a 10% discount on virtue culture cost? Or double culture in her HQ?

Then they're delaying the inevitable and that's a poor excuse. There was already a full meltdown from the product being released in the way it was. I don't know why they deserve to get the benefit of the doubt at every turn over and over again.

I kinda think they shouldn't be making such a large patch. Small changes - but frequently - would keep people interested in the game and keep their customers satisfied.

Many of the things in the patch notes are changes mods have already dealt with (EG: Quest fixes) and one of the things is just integrating a mod someone else made into the game! That kind of thing wouldn't require much effort on their part at all, especially since these mods have already had thousands of people playtesting them to make sure they don't break anything.

I suspect they will release the patch along with some DLC before Christmas.

I think they need to make a large patch because they will be redesigning the game, not just balancing it. (Some things are drastically unbalanced, and others need a redesign)

Gort:

It's important to keep in mind that Barre's bonus isn't +10% Faster Growth. It's actually +10% Food. Those are not the same thing. You can use the advantage for Faster Growth, but you can actually also use it for More Production. It's a bit like the Refugees thing. Refugees isn't just faster growth. You can also leverage the extra food into more production, more Energy, or more Science; without requiring bigger cities.

Given the way that Food Surplus boosts Food TR, and the Agricultural Development mechanic, Barre's bonus is actually a fairly dangerous one already. It's just that no one's yet leveraged it and made a big deal out of it. It wouldn't take much to really make it take off.

KrikkitTwo:

Actually, most of what they're doing does fall under "rebalancing." It's a fairly broad term that includes things like putting and removing entire units into the game. SC2 definitely did that and more during its balance testing.

Well I hope that is the case. It would explain why they haven't given specifics, if they're changing enough that details are too interconnected.
I hope there is DLC because that would mean the have a financial interest in keeping us interested. Without DLC they already got me.
I'm not usually this cynical, but this wait is bringing be down, and the only conversations left just go in circles.

It's cyclical. All of this and all the hand-wringing happened in Civ5 as well, and I truly think no small amount of players just huffed and tromped their way back to Civ4 when it was clear that Firaxis wasn't interested in just remaking Civ4 in hex grid. Many of those same people still get on here and there from time to time (see: 1UPT thread).

What's remarkable about Firaxis is that they actually insist on creating new games with new sensibilities and new mechanics and new ideas despite all this backlash from the fans. At heart, a lot of people just don't want new things. They want the old things with new graphics (see: Madden. see: Call of Duty see: every CivFanatics thread saying new games should be like the old ones).

Eventually, we'll come upon a new balance and new interesting things in CivBE, or so I hope; just like Tall vs. Wide emerged in Civ5. Civ5 now is remarkably different from what it was on release. But that wasn't done on its own. A lot of player feedback allowed that to happen. We have to talk about new balances and new ways of playing or Firaxis won't have the feedback they need to finalize CivBE.
