The rumour mill is churning! Apparently there could be either signifcant upgrade this year, to the Vista OS 32/64bit in same style as the Win 98 SE release and/or a major new build next year.

The new OS rumours imply the release date was brought forward from 2010 to Q2 2009.
Hopefully Vista users won't be left with a dud OS like Windows ME. To be honest thats pretty doubtful.

I doubt Vista will be a "dud," but it would no less suck to be one of the early adopters.

if they release an OS by Q2 2009 I'll eat my hat.

well maybe i should be a bit more specific if they release a stable OS i will. I'm sure they could change the images of vista and call it 7.0 and no one would notice.

In the end I just think this will continue to hurt vista. Since this is basically MS saying they want to treat vista like the redheaded stepchild and replace it as soon as possible. Businesses that were already weary of switching will now probalby refuse to and will instead just wait the year out.

Are they just going to call it Windows 7 or have they ran out of names for each of the Windows NT lines past Vista?

I seriously doubt it. Remember, Longhorn was originally "supposed" to be released in '04 or '05.

They overhauled the project partway through, and future OSes won't have multiyear delays like Vista did. Microsoft's software engineering system is a good read, if you're interested, it's difficult to coordinate something as massive as Windows.

That being said, MS operating systems will still get delayed, as they get released on a basis of when they're ready, not based on specific deadlines.

You've said it! Now if they do release an OS by Q2 2009...

I'm sure they'll think of something. It's already had codenames Blackcomb and Vienna. Granted, XP and Vista haven't been the most stellar names ever, but they haven't had a version-number only name since NT 4.

Ooh, they made a 25 MB kernel that does absolutely nothing. If it's still small by 2010, the OEMs will just load it with even more crapware so that a new Vista machine is still just barely usable.

I reckon theres going to be a Vista SE (Second Edition) type release, still coming this year. I remember Windows 98 getting the BSOD whilst Bill Gates was presenting it!
Win 98 attracted alot criticism like Vista and then they released Win 98 SE which was the preferred version of Windows for games before Win 2000 and XP. So I reckon Vista SE is quite likely.
