Viva Tropico: A Pure Politics NES

Perhaps we should do a study comparing the coal miners or factory workers in America to their counterparts in the Soviet Union. I am quite sure that each is equally unfree and miserable. It is certainly true that advocating capitalism in the Soviet Union can ruin your career, but I believe that Congressman McCarthy has a similar list of ruined careers in the United States, and all those people did wrong was to think differently.

Both nations are terrible and untrustworthy, they seek their own advantages at our cost. Perhaps you misunderstand me, we should not sell our island piecemeal to either of these so called "Superpowers," but we should be prepared to offer the goods that our island produces to either, and we should get the highest price for those goods that we can, regardless of who is cutting the checks, or say bartering factory equipment for cane sugar because they don't believe in "money."

Once I get home today from work, we'll have our first elections, to see for sure who's El Presidente, in the mean time I'll put up the final prediction polls on the front page, but it's still easily anyone's race.

Tuning in to the radio, Leonardo smirked as he heard the same dribble the politically minded bigots spewed over and over again. Coins that carried a message of change, but it was either heads or tails. Where was the "new"? Where was the true progressive ideals, merging what once worked with what may one day work more efficiently? It seemed as if these ideas were foreign to the racket on the air waves.

The thought of what could be, concerning the community he had lived in for as long as he could remember, was always on Leonardo's mind. With so many poor citizens lacking work, education, and healthcare, it was severely depressing to consider that men were profiting off of the misery with their corrupt capitalist minded intentions. "They'd take the clothes right off your back and sell them to you if they could", Leonardo mused. All his life he had been witness to the daily struggle of the common man... he had gone through it just as tough, every passing day, and in his mind hoped he was a stronger person because of it. Still, the memories weren't the kind he would want to relive if he had the choice or even the opportunity.. there were many ways one could reach their potential, and the turmoils of poverty did not have to be the test.

It was during that train of thought that Leo's closest friend, Pepe, came barging in the shanty.

"Leo, Leo! Has escuchado las palabras magnificantes de Alfonso Andréz-Peréz?"

Magnificent words of.. who? It was a curious moment, because Leonardo was well aware that Pepe was not one who surrounded himself with talk of social issues, as he was more of a simple minded farmer with no head for politics. But the enthusiasm in his voice was overwhelming. Pepe told Leo the speech he had heard a few hours prior, and just the fact that Pepe regurgitated word for word, with even an air of eloquent delivery, the message of candidancy, Leonardo knew that he needed to contact this man.

To: Alfonso Andréz-Peréz
From: Leonardo Martinez

Señor, I write to you to ask the following:

1) What do you mean when you say we must work according to a socialist model? What pragmatic steps do you have in mind, and what policies would be put into place to ensure this?

2) When you say "conservative economic development", how does this differ from the policies currently in place forTropico?

3) Where does your stance on religion fall into "traditional values/forward thinking innovation?" I ask as an atheist and out of concern for any unjust actions due to my beliefs.

4) Are your thoughts on the military purely defense oriented, or do you not ignore the possibility of aggressive engage in conflicts abroad?

I ask all this because I feel, at least from what I understand so far, that supporting you for the Presidency would relieve all of us working so hard to make something of this proud country of ours, and so I hope that with more understanding of your platform, I may consider voicing these ideals on your behalf to bring your message closer to the people.

(OOC: If I am accepted to this game and am unable to respond to Immaculate in time before the poll or vice-versa, take it as if my character decided to vote for Alfonso Andréz-Peréz anyways as none of the other candidates suited Leo's ideals.)

OOC: Took the chance to correct the problems. I offer my services as a natural Spanish speaker to translate English into Spanish.

It's okay, just leave it as they are. I'm Cuban and though my Spanish written grammar isn't that great, I just add it for flavor, thanks anyways.

Lopez's large stature hides his inner intellect. Often mistaken for being simple-minded, he uses this to his advantage to be better informed about the opinions of his fellow Tropicans. He believes in saying the right thing to the right person to make things happen.

All right, those who haven't voted, should take the chance now. All canidates are to be assumed to have voted for themselves.

OOC: What are the new options for generating El Presidente's background in Tropico 4? Have they changed much from 3?

(3 was basically a reskin of 1 in that regard.)

Lopez votes for the Gringo Sinclair Saltonstall

OOC: Yes, I stole the name from Red vs Blue and I can name my character whatever I want. It doesn't have to make sense! :P

1949 Emergency Elections

The big news event to be covered here is the glorious election of our new El Presidente, Manuel Hidalgo Señor! Thanks to overwhelming support from the Militarist faction, our new Señor Presidente has been elected to glorious office. The Presidente, despite the obviousness of his greatness and strength, was heavily contested for the office, receiving only twenty-eight votes out of Tropico's total population of a hundred people. The Capitalist Javier Rentierra was the next humble opponent to the glorious Presidente, receiving twenty-five votes, mostly from the religious faction. The Capitalist Yanqui Sinclair Saltonstall followed close behind, with twenty-four votes. Alfonso Andréz-Peréz followed at the bottom of the pack with twenty-three votes.

Regardless of the opposition, we welcome El President Manuel Hidalgo Señor to his inevitable glorious tenure as our ruler!

Congratulations to Milarqui to winning the Presidential race. As previously stated the updates will go as fast as Milarqui can get in orders and I can play through a year of Tropico 4. In other words, time is of the essence if you want to plot when it's not an election year.

@ChiefDesigner: The character creation is the same as Tropico 3 with a few added options. My greatest disappointment though is the 1,200 Population limit for islands. Makes me very sad.

"My fellow Tropicanos, it is very good to see that you have decided to choose me as your new President. And I am glad, for it means I can finally start to give our great nation part of what it has given me in all of these years.

"I know it has been a hard choice, for all of the other candidates gave equally worthy reasons why they should have been the President, and to all of them I say that I hope that, despite of this election not going their way, that they will accept this and support the government's actions for at least the next four years. Should they believe that I have not done a good job, then it is their right to present their candidacy to the office of President of the Republic then.

"Now, in front of us stands the first year of what will be a new era of prosperity for all of us, a new era for our beloved Republic, in which not only will we break the chains the former President put on us, but also the chains of poverty, and the weight of those that only wish to enrichen themselves without any care for all the good people of our República.

"For now, I have ordered that the first houses for those that don't have them are built, and also the construction of new workplaces that will, hopefully, be the first step towards showing the world that our nation is amongst the greatest in the world.

"I only have one more thing to say, my friends: ONWARD, TROPICO!"

*Cheers*

Remember, if you feel the Presidente is mismanaging the nation, it is up to all of you to call him out on it.

You'll have a few hours to respond to this one I guess, nice and easy.

El Presidente, four buildings, and you didn't build a church? I, and the people of Tropico, must protest your lack of appreciation for our needs, and we must demand that you build a church in the coming year.

El Presidente, I was under the impression that your platform called for dealing with the housing situation. I can sympathize with the need to punish littering, but is it not possible that you are planting tulips and other lawn ornaments before we have actually constructed the Foundation of the House?

Something about it being the "first thing" or something.
