Having been through a similar experience (USNA, not VMI) - get in shape before you get there (better shape than you are now, I mean), and just take one day at a time.
 
So like, be able to run five miles at a good time, do 100 pushups in a row...any numbers I could set my sights on?

Frankly I am leery about actual numbers - the better shape you're in going into it, the less difficult it'll be. Think of it like training for a boxing match against a vastly superior opponent - you're just looking to get hit less, because you know you'll never actually win. ;)
