Was Jesus white?

The earliest depictions of Jesus in art I've seen do not portray him with long hair. They actually portray him with short, curly brown hair.

Christian art typically depicts Jesus as a tall white man with a beard (and a halo). However, based on where and when he was (supposedly) born, the real Jesus would more likely have been an Arabic or Semitic man, with dark features and dark hair. Why did the Christians decide to depict him as a white man if that is basically lying about the central figure of their religion?

There's been a lot of movement from 2000 years ago. Some of the ancient Egyptians were supposed to be blonde. It is quite possible that the Jews in that area at that time were white (most Jews today are). Of course it is possible he wasn't.

That said, who cares?

Better yet, how can many of them be anti semitic and at the same time, worship a Jewish person? If one buys into the whole 'son of god' thing then his race should be irrelevant anyway.

Np, ethnically speaking, he was only half God and half Arabic. :p

I am in a literal mood.

Technically humans cannot be "white". We are all slight shades of white, some have very, very heavy shades (or nearly black), others not so much. I think its called "pigments". Either way, according to history, Jesus allegedly came from Israel, and apparently was a Jew, so therefore he would be probably the typical human off colour of white, probably slightly brown.

Are you saying that all humans are a form of "white"? Could you explain this to me? I am interested.

This is what I have come to understand in my life. And maybe I'm wrong. That is why I am asking. But dark colors are more dominate over lighter colors from what I have seen. And genetically speaking "white" people can't make dark skinned babies, whereas "black" people can make light skinned babies. And some "black" people can make babies whos skin is lighter than a "white" person. (Albinos) Maybe I have missed something. Help me out.

Not only the Christians depict their worshipped in a way they look like.
When I was among the Hare Krishnas, I always wondered on the pictures - they depicted many saints, all being supposedly from India. All of them were like the usual European.

Hmm....interesting. So they didn't even attempt to translate it? Talk about FUBAR.

I think it's safe to assume that whatever the old boy was, he wasn't a pale, long-haired Anglo-Saxon. It's not possible. The mere latitude of the area entails beind a bit swarthy, and having long hair was 'unclean' at the time.
Absolutely right :goodjob: This long-haired Anglo-Saxon image with blue eyes and blond hairs it's HYPOCRITICAL.

Is this really interesting to anyone? I'm complaining, I'm just asking. Seriously: would you really care to know for sure?

Extremist right-wing 'good' Christians would really care to know how Jesus looked like, don't you think? ;) Maybe they'd abandon their religion if Jesus had dark skin, IMHO.

In this case, s*** stands for: sweetness, sincerity or sour mash?

 I wonder if such people would be offended if one made a statement that that Jesus was none English speaking man with middle eastern facial features and skin who was born and circumcised a Jew.

There is a book written by a Swedish writer entitled: "Watch out, guys - here comes God and she's really p*ssed". I like that. Too bad the writer is a moron.

To answer your question, Rammstein, yes this is interesting to me at least. I find it interesting that one of the most influential figures in human history can be so commonly misrepresented. It's kind of like Napoleon being pictured as a Chinese guy, or Washington as a Native American.

Also, I think that it's intriguing evidence that the Christian faith is based far more on the images that the Catholic Church developed in the first few centuries AD than it actually is on the "Word of God."

"Hey, you guys notice that on p. 326 on it says 'Jebus'?"

"Hm. That's supposed to be Jesus, right?"

It's not important how he looked but what he tought.

Was Jesus white?

Well, I think a lot of people say he wasn't wong. :)

The climate would make a Swede darken rapidly, so I don't think anyone could say he could be described as white.

I thought Jesus was just an Englishizing way of pronouncing Yeshua?

Not even english, maybe Latin, since the Latin word for Jesus is Jesu...

I always thought the word Jesus came from Jesu, which is a non-Jewish form of the name "Jesse".

The only person of the Apostles and Jesus and Mary and Mary Magdalene (etc.) to be shown Jewish-y is Judas  . I wonder why
