Posted this over in BNW section, but I feel like that conversation makes much more sense here:

If another expansion is on the way then one of Khmer, Pagan/Burma, or Vietnam is 100% given.

If we are only playing by DLCs, the chances are smaller, but I still think one particular civ has a really, really good chance at a DLC: Khmer. Pagan/Burma, though pretty strong, doesn't have the marketable credentials of a Khmer. Vietnam is very marketable and accessible, but they don't have the historical strength of Khmer

If Majapahit/Indonesia is the most powerful maritime SEA civ, then Khmer is the most powerful mainland civ. It's mostly about the sphere of influence, power & leadership, and cultural/architectural prowess that places these two up top - yes, their geography is very important, but if that was the defining factor then we would have to automatically throw in some form of Australia, which is not really necessary

For this reason, combined with the expanded representation the Civ series now has, I think both have an incredibly good chance of becoming Civ mainstays in future titles - starting with this current one. I really do

Here's the deal. If we had a new game in development (Civ 6?), then Khmer would be very likely as a Civ. But... with the decision of including Siam the Khmer would be too similar culturally where as Vietnam is a strong Civ and has a very different culture than Siam.
So just my two cents...

Here is a simplified map of major spheres of Southeast Asia. Tell me, how is Khmer too close to Siam when you have all those European powers in civ that overlap just as much, if not more:

Here's another one:

There is no conflict by including Khmer, the largest mainland Southeast Asian empire the world has seen, in addition to Siam and Indonesia.

I think Vietnam would be a great civ to have, but they fall under a different category than Khmer.

I think it's possible to have both Vietnam and Khmer should there be a new expansion

I think it's more the issue of perceived similarity than actual similarity for Siam and the Khmer. And we all know how the Civ series has had tokenism quite a lot... until now, to some extent. With Indonesia we have two SE Asian civs; with Morocco we know they're willing to break up the Middle East/North Africa a bit more; with Poland we no longer have Russia as the only real Eastern European civ.

Which is why I think this...

I think it's possible to have both Vietnam and Khmer should there be a new expansion

...wouldn't be implausible for a hypothetical third expansion. Maybe we could have a SE Asian scenario (maybe that's a bit too optimistic). Would be pretty cool.

I should have elaborated. I do not think Khmer and Siam are too close, I just think for the less educated buyers they would not see much of a difference and would think 'why buy?', where as with Vietnam the buyers would think 'Ooh Aah, It's a new unique Civ, Yay!'.
And by the way, I said they were too similar culturally. They built very similarly and had similar clothing. Of course they are their own people and are different from Siam, But not noticeably enough to the less educated buyers to include them.

You don't see them including every single empire in India now do you.

My preferred civs in order from the region:
Khmer, Siam, Indonesia, Vietnam, Pagan
I would love to see both Khmer and Vietnam to be included in a possible future expansion

I would love to see any 9 of these civs included in it:
(hard to choose the "best" ones, but my preferred 9 bolded)
In a perfect world, all these 15 civs should be included...
Hungary, Khmer, Vietnam, Armenia, Phoenicia, Sumer, Hittites, Kongo, Mali, Nubia, Tibet, Khazars, Hebrews, Pueblo, Mapuche

If there's going to be an expansion with 2 SE Asian civs, then I want 2 African civs too. The more I hear about the Ashanti, the cooler they seem but Kongo must be in as well.

Mali is still one of the best options for Africa, even with their territorial overlap with the Songhai

Mali would be cool, but considering the overlap and that Songhai really were their successors, I would want other civs like Nubia, the Ashanti, and Kongo to get in before them. I sort of just wish we had Mali instead of Songhai in the first place, but oh well.

Just wondering... If Ukraine/Kievan`Rus was included what leader would they choose?
I was thinking Oleg of Novogrod or Igor of Kiev, But maybe someone has some better knowledge of their leaders?
Just wonderin'

Yaroslav the Wise would probably rule Ukraine. He ruled Kiev at its height and revised their law code. Was it just me that was surprised that Kiev wasn't religious, what with being a holy city of Russian Orthodoxy?

Yaroslav, Hmm... I'll have to read more about him.

Olga (that's what she's called, right?) would also be a decent candidate, I think. Not as good as Yaroslav, but not too bad if they're looking for a female leader.

Yeah she would be cool, But they will most likely pick a male leader, so this is what I think is the order of leaders by likelihood.
1.Yaroslav
2.Oleg
3.Igor
4.Olga
I hope they do a final expansion or some more single civ dlc, because I REALLY want these civs we've been talking about.

EDIT:
Now that I think about it they might actually choose Olga just to include more female leaders.
(Pretty much, It could go either way.... So I just contradicted myself :D:hammer2::dance:)

Isn't Kievan Rus/Ukraine a little too similar to Russia? I have Ukrainian friends who say that the cultures are very similar, so I'm wondering what people think. I'm really excited for these civs too though.

They're about as distinct as Germany/Austria, Spain/Portugal, or England/USA.

Where is Hungary from your wishlist? :P
You have the Kievan Rus/Ukraine on it, so Hungary being European is not an excuse ;)

Probably just a little bit more distinct than Germany/Austria.
