It's a good example of a medieval custom that's outlived its usefulness, and the inability of some people to recognize it. Instead of thinking about the purpose of the "rule" they concentrate on blind obedience to it.
Originally it was a good and simple custom. In the absence of adequate sanitation it made sense to handle food and drink with the right hand and use the left for wiping the arse. Of course it never made a lot of sense for left-handed people do that, but that's a consequence of having an oversimplified rule.
In brief, this is the sort of thing that happens when you rely on superstition and tradition instead of critical thinking.
And it applies as much to Christian fundamentalists as it does to Islamic fundamentalists. No difference.
