This isn't the story I remember, though; in that the step mother takes the children into the woods with the express purpose of losing them... because there's a famine "in the land". But Hansel leaves a trail of pebbles so that they can find their way home again. Which doesn't work because the stepmother just takes them out again the next day.

Still...

... this is a clear case of elder-abuse, imo.
