Should you have nothing but a pen and squared paper, I recommend this game that I don't know the name of or who taught me when I was young.
Draw a race track, decide the direction, draw a starting/finishing line and put your cars on it. The first turn, and after crashing, you start with moving one tile N, E, S or W.
After that, you either repeat your previous move or put your new position NW, NE, SW or SE of it. That's how you accellerate/deccellerate and turn.
Imagine a "star" with the center placed on where you would've ended up if you continued, that's your five choices.
If the connected line to your next position, pass through out-of-bounds (touching it is OK though), you've obviously crashed and start from where you hit the wall.
