Finnish by J. A. Hollo. His translations of classics were pretty good, so one could think that this is good also. On the orher hand he might have been more fluent with Greek and Latin than Dutch.

Writing one right now. I hope some publisher publishes it one day. Its title is Despot.
Still plugging through The New Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts. Just now getting to the Greeks, so, no, I'm not biting this off in big chunks by any means.
I'm nearly finished with Thomas Cahill's Mysteries of the Middle Ages. Very informal, but but quite readable as well as being an attractively presented book. The author uses illustrations set within the text (rather than having separate pages in the middle of the book for "plates"). In general, I think he tries to convey the idea of a medieval manuscript with the book -- which is fitting given that the book is about intellectual life in the medieval era.
Recommend for causal interest in Middle Ages? What academic level?
