Finnish by J. A. Hollo. His translations of classics were pretty good, so one could think that this is good also. On the orher hand he might have been more fluent with Greek and Latin than Dutch.

Music by Philip Glass by Philip Glass.

I thought this was clever, and since nobody else commented on it, I figured that I would. :D

I'm new to the thread, fwiw. I just finished The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell. Big fan of Cornwell; he never lets me down, and this was no exception. On with the Saxons!

Still plugging through The New Penguin History of the World by J.M. Roberts. Just now getting to the Greeks, so, no, I'm not biting this off in big chunks by any means..

I'm about to start Mysteries of the Middle Ages.

uhhhhhhhh no, not into the horror genre...

The Golden Dream of Carlo Chuchio By Lloyd Alexander, pretty good, but not great.

Writing one right now. I hope some publisher publishes it one day. Its title is Despot.

Mega Manga: The Complete Reference to Drawing Manga

Just finished The Turning by Tim Winton. It's a book of short stories, consisting of the same few characters at different points in their lives. It's interesting- but not everyone's cup of tea.

I've been reading some of that too, as it was assigned for background reading in a class on the history of the construction industry. I haven't read it straight though, but have read the assigned sections on the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

I'm just starting Mid-Course Correction by Ray C. Anderson, as one of my professors highly recommended it and said that she would give extra credit to those who do a book report on it.

Khruschev's Cold War by Alexandr Fursenko

This is a great book and gives a real insight into how international diplomacy works, I'd recommend it strongly

I'm directing a production of Six Characters in Search of an Author at some point, so my next read will probably be that.

Great Powers and the Quest for Hegemony (The World order since 1500) by Jeremy Black

I'm nearly finished with Thomas Cahill's Mysteries of the Middle Ages. Very informal, but but quite readable as well as being an attractively presented book. The author uses illustrations set within the text (rather than having separate pages in the middle of the book for "plates"). In general, I think he tries to convey the idea of a medieval manuscript with the book -- which is fitting given that the book is about intellectual life in the medieval era.

Recommend for causal interest in Middle Ages? What academic level?

I would recommend it, yes -- based on what I've read. The author is almost incredibly informal. The author combines well-structured sentences with snarky comments to the reader. It reminds me of a lecture-like narrative. As for academic level, I imagine I could have read this in late high school but I can also imagine reading at the undergraduate level or above. (It's about 300 pages.)

Bernard Cornwell: Kings of the North. It's quite good so far, I do like historical fiction when it's backed up by good research. It's about King Alfred and the almost demise of the Saxon's by the Danes. We were literally an iota from speaking Danish. He also wrote the Sharpe novels.

I'd recommend David Gemmell's Troy series if you like historical fiction as well.
