If I have to choose one and only one (considering that Poland finally got in)... without any doubt whatsoever - Hungary. They had MASSIVE influence on Europe. Most of the military ideas like Hussars come from them. Their folklore flooded Slavic countries and huge part of western European folklore is based upon their's. I am mega-surprised that they are not yet in the game. Maybe they will be in since this expansion focuses on culture. I think in terms of cultural influence Hungary could be right after Italy. Just imagine playing as Vlad the Impaler. Besides black fits them well...

I have read a few of these threads and I am also surprised by no one mentioning Cuba. Perhaps Scotland, they are a perfect example of conflict of culture (with England), but there are already two Civs from the 'not so Great Britain'. Maybe Aborigines.
Other than that, hmm. It feels like the game is lacking some Siberian tribes, from before Russia. I honestly do not know if there were any interesting ones, but it is a giant space filled only by Catherine while the Near East is stuffed with nations, which succeed another nation right in the exact same spot.

Yeah... definitely Hungary!!!

Serbia or Yugoslavia should be on the list, seeing how Sofia has the same colour as Belgrade they seem a quite possible dark-horse.
I'd say Vietnam will be our dark-horse.

I'm pretty sure Venice would qualify as a Dark Horse. Not too many people are expecting it either.

I was under the impression that a Dark Horse was at the same time as being unexpected also not very well known; I would apply that to being not very well known to support the content (i.e. not a civ that is thought of when you think of the themes brought in by the expansion), so personally I don't think Venice constitutes as a Dark Horse; at least not for me-as I see it fitting perfectly. It'd be straight out of the blue generally speaking though, I suppose.

Yeah... definitely Hungary!!!

"Great" is a measurement of size.

I think Hungary would be a worthy inclusion and if it were included would be a Dark Horse most certainly, but the time to add it has since passed. Especially now that we have Poland. It'd be exceptionally odd to have two sovereigns of Hungary in the game as well, what with Austria.

I was talking about the size. Power they had insane, size of the island is not insane as much...

Sovereignty has nothing to do with it, I think. If that would be the case then half of the civs we have now, would not be included. Every nation at some point lost and / or regained its independence. I think it just has to be either distinctive or have had influence on history.

Merina Kingdom. Potential for a female leader and possibly a diplomacy-based UA (or perhaps some kind of bonus for adopting other religions, since the London Missionary Society was important in speeding Madagascar's development), but mostly Madagascar is just one of my areas of interest.

Most of the named options aren't really 'dark horses'. Vietnam is rather plausible; Sumer is certainly not in, but until Ur was announced was a possibility due to historical prominence and Civ game history. Similarly I don't think other civs that have been in past versions of the game - such as the Hittites - really count as dark horses.

Indeed. Strictly speaking, it's the name of the largest island in the British Isles; the country name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I hope for a dark horse civ from Central-Asia: the Kara-Khanid Khanate. Khazars would be my 2nd choice.

I would be so happy if they included Cuba. Not only would we have a legitimate Caribbean/Latin American culture in there, but it would also fit very will with the ideological theme this game is pursuing.

Hungary would also be a phenomenal choice. However, as another poster has pointed out, I don't think we'll get them considering we already have Austria and Poland in there.

I really hope they include either a Latin American country (like Argentina) or another African civilization. This game has done a much better job at representing African cultures, but there is so much that could be added that would deeply enrich the game franchise.

Tibet all the way!

Vietnam. Not necessarily because I'm Vietnamese.

But, well, there's a good choice for a female leader, the Trung Sisters, who would actually deserve the spot rather than, say, Wu Zeitian - the Trung sisters are one of the most revered national heroes of Vietnam.

I do think Vietnam's chances are higher than I initially expected, if the Sofia CS theory is anything to go by - given that Belgrade is still in, the only other plausible CS --> civilizations would be Budapest/Hungary and Hanoi/Vietnam. I think Hungary would be a great addition, but given its somewhat overlap with Austria and Poland, I'm not sure whether it'd be in. Vietnam, though, would work well with BNW's new themes, it has a relatively easy choice for a female leader (for those who have some knowledge of Vietnamese history), and is relatively unique in Southeast Asia for being the only Chinese-influenced civ there (so it'd contrast with the already-in Siam and the other possible SE Asian civs)
