I was going through a Coke vs. Pepsi thread back in 2007, and I think I'll spare that flamewar for now. The point is, Warpus posted this interesting map:

This surprised me; I had only grown up around people who call it "soda", while "pop" and "Coke" just sound weird to me. I've only heard "soda" around this forum, but does anyone call it something else? And what are the "other" names?

If it's brown and fizzy, usually just call it coke. And besides that, the most popular drink in East Texas is Dr. Pepper.
Sometimes I use 'soda' to distinguish it so people don't think I'd want a Coca-Cola.
Never heard anyone call it a pop except on TV.

Pop normally. Occasionally soda. Rarely Coke, since that's too brand specific.

Insert Brand name soda here...

Since I used soda in the above sentence, I guess that's kind of the default for me.

Yeah, I don't think that was the first one either.

Sodavand (sodawater)
If its brown: Cola (coke)

BTW what do you call soda if it's colourless and has a flavour of lime. Like 7-up or Sprite?

For some reason it's called "sports-water" or "sports drink" here in Denmark.

(Well the reason is not that hard to figure out. One of the major danish soda-brands is Faxe Kondi, which has branded itself as the soft drink for athlets. Kondition=fitness)

Fitness is something I drink.

Two random copycats

We call it 'pop' in Maritimes Canada. I call it 'soda' when I'm trying to be funny. Calling a non-Coke 'Coke' just seems silly to me, but I sometimes call tissue paper Kleenex despite its brand.
