What do you need to be virtually self sustainable on a BOAT?

fishing rod
some kind of trawling net thing for getting edible weeds off the sea bed
solar desalination equipment
leather and/or plastic clothes that wont degrade
solar pannels
satlite internet laptop
civ 3
a bed

Thought I would bring this up to the year 2010.

I feel I need to be able to generate income as I float about.. suggestions?

Having to return to shore every week would kinda put a downer on things...

Ooh, maybe I can sell it as a holiday destination to hippy-types!

I would suggest you sign up over at cruisersforum.com and look up "Boat Ownership & Making a Living".

I can tell you anyone willing to get in their scuba gear and clean the bottom of boats is worth their weight in gold and keeps little Aba's tattoos from sagging. This is especially the case in salt water. I think the going price in some parts is $3/square foot.

Learning about diesel engines, how to repair sails and painting/varnishing are always useful in a marina. I know I paid my boat electrician quite a bit last year so as long as you're willing to put in the work for that or a mechanic it's always in demand.

Get a USB stick and write articles about your travel's where you have an adsense account like mygeoinfo.com or ehow.com.

On shore there's a lot of things I can think of but would require you telling me where you're going.

Mono hull or catamaran? I would really consider a catamaran which is a little more costly. Actually, if you're serious you should pick up a book on the topic like "The Essentials of Living Aboard a Boat". I think what you'll find is this is not a cheap proposition so you may want to store some acorns before you get on the high seas.

As long as you have a cellular signal then it's quite possible to create a internet connection. Adsense is your friend as I mentioned earlier. It obviously takes time to build up an audience but with Aba's good looks, tats and general chicanery he should be set on that one.

:)

I am thinking a converted "tub" would be the most apt for my endevour. This isn't sailing in the romantic sense, this is hermiting myself away on my own private tropical floating island.

Id flit between the philieans i feel. Shall, calm waters to slowly put-put around.

Scale is LARGE. I want a garden, chickens etc, to be able to remain at sea for the longer the better!

@Whomp. As ever your suggestions are very sensible, be in mind this fantasy of mine will not be realised until at least my 40's.. i've got to do this ol farmery larkey first!

Also need to recruit my Pam.. Lizzie seems like the sort (she already is a dab hand sailer!) but she is only very young, so we will have to see how that relationship develops.

With a combination of Whomps commercial websites, and Narz' alternative life websites, hopefully I can some to some nice middle ground with some viable/commercial/hippy/modern living thing.

A floating kibbutz?

you are going to need a
barge
location will need to be the Pacific
internet

A bed that can float? :)
