What do you need to be virtually self sustainable on a BOAT?

The least corrosive of all is diamond. Well, we're not talking about cost-efficiency here, aren't we ;)

well his island was pretty big, but i had the same thought (storm = fubar)

but i guess if he made it really huge it would be fine

And if you fly no flag?
You might be stopped (by coastguards) when trying to leave...

What if you leave when they arent looking? a pirate will find a way! yarr.
Sounds like fun. I'd go for laminated paper boat. It'll be light, durable, and its a b**** to tear laminated paper! (waterproof as well!).
And it will be cheaper than coating your boat with diamonds.

Pykrete, so long as you don't mind living in the Arctic.

Pykrite.

Its twue.

HU? what that?

its a go anyway, i need to grow crops + keep animals

Pykrete is a substance thats harder than concrete that they were considering using to build aircraft carriers from. Its 14% sawdust and 86% ice.

You could breed penguins on your arctic ship, and trade whales for vegetables with pirates.

RRRRR! :) perhaps..

im not sure if i like the chilly climate.. also how do i sale to the pirate with the vegies?

and just where to i set my postal adress? :)

(670,466) on a good day, god knows in bad weather?

This thread is even more disturbing that Narz's ones.

It reminds me of the movie Waterwolrd.

Any ideas about how the shape could be?

Modularity would be good, so you can add modules over time and discard the ones that are seriously damaged.

Oh, my God, I cannot believe I am writting in this thread.

narz's thread.. could you link me please?

hmmm... modules is a v good idea, the whole would never die out, just be under a constant flux of renewal! i like it!

There are sailboats with steel hulls, and what they call ferrocement hulls, either would probably work for you. The material doesn't have to be perfectly waterproof, just waterproof enough to not require much bilge pumping. For that matter, there are spherical glass floats used by fishermen that make it all the way across the Pacific through the worst storms.

I'd think you'd want some mobility so as to avoid the worst storms at sea; the problem with no drydocking is eventually barnacles and seaweed will accumulate on your hull enough to make moving it tough. But if you're not too worried about speed, bouyancy isn't a problem; you could fill enough compartments with plastic foam or the like to make it virtually unsinkable.

From "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"

Scene 5
Bedivere, "What do you do with witches?"
Villager #2, "Burn!"
Villager #1, "Burn!"
Crowd, "Burn! Burn them up! Burn!..."
Bedivere, "And what do you burn apart from witches?"
Villager #1, "More witches!"
Villager #3, "Shh!"
Villager #2, "Wood!"
Bedivere, "So why do witches burn?"
[pause]
Villager #3, "Be... cause they're made of... wood?"
Bedivere, "Good! Heh heh.."
Crowd, "Oh yeah, oh."
Bedivere, "So..how do we tell whether she is made of wood?"
Villager #1, "Build a bridge out of her."
Bedivere, "Ah, but can you not also make bridges out of stone?"
Villager #1, "Oh, yeah."
Random, "Oh, yeah. True. Uhh.."
Bedivere, "Does wood sink in water?"
Villager #1, "No. No."
Villager #2, "No, it floats! It floats!"
Villager #1, "Throw her into the pond!"
Crowd, "The pond! Throw her into the pond!"
Bedivere, "What also floats in water?"
Villager #1, "Bread!"
Villager #2, "Apples!"
Villager #3, "Uh.. very small rocks!"
Villager #1, "Cider!"
Villager #2, "Uh, Gra--gravy!"
Villager #1, "Cherries!"
Villager #2, "Mud!"
Villager #3, "Uh, churches! Churches!"
Villager #2, "Lead! Lead!"
Arthur, "A duck!"
Crowd, "Oooooooh.."
Bedivere, "Exactly! So.. logically.."
Villager #1, "If.. she.. weighs.. the same as a duck,.. she's made of wood."
Bedivere, "And therefore?"
Villager #2, "A witch!"
Villager #1, "A witch!"
Crowd, "A witch! A witch!"

Make the island out of witches! Or.. uh.. ducks! :D

In international waters, you are (as far as I know) bound by the laws of the country whos flag you're flying.

Not always...
