What do you think about Poland?

I can't honestly say I like Poland, and I hate myself for that because disliking a nation makes no sense.

I dislike

the nationalism
the homophobia
the ultra Catholicism
the anti-Russian grudge
the bitterness
seem very dour for some reason

I like

well, actually, most Polish people I've known have been nice despite the having some/none/all of the qualities above.
I moved house a month ago, and it really made me realise how much my horrible little country depends on Poles, cause frankly the only thing that wasn't done by Poles was the floors.

Put it this way: I hate my hatred of Poland.

I forgot to mention the ultra-Catholicism and the "dourness". Although the latter quality seems to skip some I've met. One of my Polish flatmates is great fun and somewhat crazy.

in real life?
I love Poland and polish people. I have many business conection in Poland and go there twice a year. Having fun in Poland is easy, people like having a good time and every time I go there I spend memorable moments. Poland has also countless beatiful chicks. And one of my best friends id a french-polish. So in real life, Poland rocks

Here on OT:
Many are nationalistic dicks, but some of the smartest CFC posters happen to be polish ;-), so it is 50%/50%

Oh!

Page two and I can still leave a post?

Well: Potatoes come to mind. And after that it'd be potatoes, potatoes, potatoes, potatoes, vodka, potatoes, nice people, potatoes, agriculture and potatoes. :goodjob:

Perhaps you should visit it some time? Might give you some more perspective.
It seems to me that those negative things you mention are most typical for the rural east.
At least those I know down there, including my parents-in-law, don't have any of those traits.
Interestingly enough, my worst experience with Poles has been here in Norway...

Nationalism is more of a joke. We are never serious when it comes to it. Historically, of coarse we were a loud people. But now, We only demand Lwow. :D

Homophobia is not a Polish characteristic. It's something that BBC and CNN implied and now everyone believes it, just because of some priest. Isn't there some preacher guy in the states who is extremely anti-homo? I don't see the world saying all Americans are Homophobic.

Ultra Catholicism is overrated. Only the older people are super-religious, like in most of Europe. Not to mention that the middle aged population used it as something to hold on to during communism. That is why we are perceived as highly religious. The younger generation tend to not be religious.

There is no Anti-Russian grudge like Western Europeans and Americans like to believe. We don't hate the Russians, as they are as innocent as us when it came to communism. The Average Russian had no more control over the situation than the average Pole. We were against the Soviet government, like all the world if that is what you mean. And our more aggressive stance against modern Russia in't some grudge. Look what they are doing to Ukraine and Georgia! If Ukraine collapsed, they would try doing the same thing towards the Baltic States and Modolva, and eventually to us and Slovakia.

Bitterness of what?

And I will have to search up what is "Dour" on google...

Also, you guys are doing a good job on not going to Eastern European comments and getting this thread turned into a troll thread.. So far.

Much larger and much worse version of Slovakia. Ugly language, too much religion, too much nationalism, too "rural" :mischief:

Meh. That is because Slovakia is rightfully ours. ;)

Our language only looks ugly towards a Czech. Us Poles just know that you czechs have an inferiority complex towards Germans, and germanized your language. ;)

Rural is true. Luckily it is changing. Atleast we are on the path to one day become a mini-Germany. :)

I have noticed that Polish people Canada are often hyper-conservative. Those that came in the last 25-30 years anyway. I figured it was a self-selection process.

You're welcome to be the 18th Bundesland of the Republic (after Austria.)

I've seen you make this mistake in multiple threads. It is of course in English, when you say coarse that means something rough or not smooth.

This has been Godwynn's helpful post of the day. Back to regular programming.

Now that you mention bitterness, that is not false concerning Polish people. All, well many, poles I met gives you that impression that they feel cheated by History. They believe that they are not in the "position" they ought to be in. They considers it a curse that they were stack between those "blooddy" germans in the west and "bloody" russians in the east, and were prevented from florishing because every one was against them. Polish, like Arabs for that matter, are very paranoid.

Because history Poles have realy not reason to think otherwise.

 Maybe the older generations.

I think most Poles remember the time when Poland was a superpower in Europe, and anyone who bothered to research why we failed, would know that it was because of the Nobles being to powerful. They could rival the King, and the King couldn't do anything about it.

The original partitions of Poland was just Austria, Russia, and Prussia trying to gain some border territory. Then the nobles were bribed by them and decided to side with them instead of the king for a profit. Poland couldn't handle it, it was basically the king and a few nobles against the rest of Poland's nobles, Prussia, Austria-Hungary and Russia. Basically a war impossible to win.

It wasn't Austria, Prussia and Russia that caused Poland's annexation, it was Poland itself.(and if Poland didn't have these internal problems, we probably would have survived the first partition war, with only minor land loss, and the Austrians/Russians/Prussians would be to lazy to try again.

That isn't being cheated by history. ;)

Although we were backstabbed by the west following WWII.

Hmmm......

Real life?
Girls, vodka, same mentality (these belong to the same line)
Similar past, similar customs
Slavic langauge I could occasionally understand.

The bad points I do not want to list.

You can understand polish?

I can't understand anything of Russian.

Also, you should point out how our vodka is 100% better than Russian vodka. ;)

That is why we need a Russian thread :hint: :hint: ;)

After I drink Russian vodka I can also drink Polish one ;)

I can't accurately gauge what I think about Poland until I see some of their models.

I think it should be a playable civ in Civilization 4. I also think a granny of mine was polish. That's it, pretty much.
