just seen that dumb ad again...it's really embarrasing
The last sentence about the guys being too cute...almost puked

Singaporeans are exam smart, i will not put anyone from other countries against a Singaporean in an Exam, and NUS students are the epitome of this philosophy. NUS graduates have a reputation for being uninspired and lacking initiative, thats a very bad thing for a business grad...
I don't understand the philosophy in Singapore at all. The students are exam smart indeed, but pretty useless when facing real life. I have seen scholars that when facing a philosophical question completely fumble, a chemical engineer that is not sure whether adding acid to acid could get an alkaline solution etc etc

Again, I think it all boils down to the interest of the governemnt here. They need a nation of non-thinking, uninspired yes-men. It did work in the past. MNC's from overseas overcome that issue by employing a myriad of foreigners. I remember in my first job here, I commented to my boss that our project team has not a single Singaporean. What was his comment? "Isn't that good?'
For the sake of this country, I hope that the youngsters do stand up for their rights and future one day instead of being this apathetic mass that the government can mold as they wish.

Hey, the guys are cute, at least I am, well at least I like to think I am...

Anyway, I digress, you know, Singaporean students are really good for little other than exams. I had to explain, with great angst, to an undergraduate why the free press was important. He felt that it wasn't and didn't want information overload from shady sources, therefore felt that the state run newspaper was enough and the only trustworthy source. They know that because the teachers at the state run schools told them so.

The fact is that most students here know nothing out of the syllabus. That tends to swallow their whole life and the state machinery tends not to want them to know about stuff like liberalism and stuff to keep them under control.

ThERat, are you Singaporean?

Funxus, a stint here would be a peak at what North Korea is like, so if you're sick of freedom, this will help you appreciate it much more. Hmm I hope I'm not being watched.

It is overly harsh to suggest that all Singaporean students are inept, i assume that you exclude yourself from your statement at least. NUS is a very good University, it is just not as good as most Singaporean think it is, and ridiculous ads like that are there to reinforce this stupid culture of elitism that surronds me everyday. If Singaporeans think that we are numbah 1 then the government must be doing the right thing. Many of NUS students are intelligent and enquiring, but most are simply apathetic and bored, n i cannot blame them, it is the culture and society. The grades are placed on a bell curve as well, so you know that even if you did slightly worse off than the other student, you could be graded much lower, everyone wants that slight edge that comes from repetitious studying and model answers. Singaporean guys 'may' be cute, but we are definitely seen as boring by girls.

I don't think I would attend a school which had to advertise. Usually the one's that do say send us $29.95 and we will send you a diploma.

every college advertises. ever watch a college athletic event on tv? or had recruiters come to your highschool?

The ad wans't exactly a "oh-my-gosh-I-need-to-get-to-NSU-now!" type thing, but in the world of advertising, I don't see what's so bad about it?

Alright, they are not inept. They are just completely boring and behave like AI! Its really frustrating talking to most of them about stuff that they are not programmed to do in school. Oh well, guess that's how screwy things are here.

And Singapore didn't have these ads here in the past cos there were 2 universities. Not exactly cut throat competition. The ads came after the new one popped up. I wish they would just go back to their core competencies though. Advertising seems to just distract them.

And if the North Koreans can survive, I guess I will be able to hold on till I can defect.

I still do have hope that the younger generation is getting really sick and tired of all the propaganda..the recent election was absolutely disgusting..the media, the PM, whoever...felt as if I am in the wrong movie... :vomit:
I always wonder what those so called journalists think, they don't even deserve that title, they are mere messengers of the governments 'great news'.

Well, I know that the youngsters here can't stand all that as well. I am sure once the grand old father is gone, things will change. And his son is damn scared of that.

by the way, I am not a S'porean, but have lived here long enough to be aware of things.

I don't understand how anyone could consider living in such a conservative and restrictive society.

I'd do it. I am so socially conservative (in the sense that I CHOOSE not to do a whole lot of things) that they probably don't prohibit much I'd ever do. Notre Dame has very strict rules on what can and can't be done, but it didn't prohibit anything I ever wanted to do.

Well I hope you don't chew gum. We are also 140/167 on Reporters Without Borders rankings for free press so you will only get the official party line. Like what TheRat said, the press is not a watchdog of Democracy here, it is the ruling party's lapdog. Be careful what you wish for.
