When I went to church with my family as a kid it was just typical casual clothing, jeans and a shirt. Masses in the catholic schools I attended would obviously require the school uniform.

Either a shirt, tie, and jeans, or slacks and a collared shirt, depending mostly on how behind I am on laundry. I might bust out a suit on major feasts.

Back when I was a good catholic boy, my parents took us to church every sunday. When we moved to Canada we went to a catholic Polish-Canadian parish in a city with a large Polish immigrant and 2nd/3rd generation population. It was a pretty busy place, on sundays.

And let me tell you - all church really was was a way for people to show off how nice they can dress. It was a fashion show. It was a social event, one where you show off your kids, your dress, your new earrings, your new shoes, and so on.

It makes sense I guess - church was the one place where a lot of members of the local Polonia (Polish community) come together. Since everyone is going to be there, including your butcher, the guy who helped you put up your shed, your kids' teacher, and so on, you want to look your best. I found it incredibly silly and pretentious though.
