What First Brought You Here?

I'm currently at TrekBBS, and not much has changed regarding canon and the configuration of spaceships. I ended up putting one of the pro Star Trek authors (Christopher L. Bennett) on ignore because he was such a jerk to me about canon/continuity. And the Neutral Zone forum makes worst OT threads here look like a genteel picnic by comparison; over there anything goes and even the moderators openly troll people.

As for saying you don't watch TOS... try saying you hated the Abrams movies. Some people can't understand the difference between "these movies are stupid" and "you are stupid because you like these movies." The first is my sincerely-held opinion, but the second is what most of the people there insist I said.

Actually, there are people there who say they've never seen TOS. It does make it difficult to have a conversation about the ethics of changing history when the person you're talking to has never seen "City on the Edge of Forever."

Anyway, I'm entered in two of the avatar contests over there - wish me luck. :)

It wasn't easy to express your opinions over there, is what the main problem was... especially if your opinion was seem as blasphemy by other posters, which oftentimes happened to me.

There were some good posters on there, but.. it just wasn't the place for me. Good luck on the contest. :)

I actually have been meaning to watch TOS.. at some point. You know, to see if I've been missing out on anything. I've watched bits and pieces of episodes and I was never really pulled in, but you never know. Not to take this thread on a tangent though, but it's just that trekBBS was my go-to forum for many years.. I have a lot of things to say about it, I guess.

'Blasphemy' is a good analogy. I went into the nuTrek movie forum there and stated I didn't like the movies and why, and from the reaction you'd have thought I'd burned down a dozen churches, a pile of bibles, and cursed the cast and anyone who watched and liked the movies. At least now I've found a few others who also dislike them, sometimes for the same reason I did, sometimes for some other reason. They're getting vilified as well.

Some TOS episodes are admittedly really stupid. Some are classics, like the aforementioned "City on the Edge of Forever" which usually tops the polls as the best Star Trek episode of all time. Depending on what kinds of episodes you like (action, humor, philosophy, time travel, scientific problems, character development, etc.), there are at least some of them you'd probably enjoy.

There's a Star Trek thread here in the Arts & Entertainment forum, so if you've got more to say about Star Trek, that's a good place to say it. If it's TrekBBS you have more to say about, feel free to drop me a PM or post in the IALS social group. :)

I'm in a 3-way tie for first in the avatar contest at the moment. The contest ends tomorrow afternoon, and it's very suspenseful to see if someone will pull ahead or if it's going to stay a tie.

I'd come across CFC, as well as Apolyton, off and on in the years before I joined. I recall discovering the Civilization III Hall of Fame in 2003 or 2004 while at a friend's house, and being amazed by the scores. I think Moonsinger was leading the boards then, so it probably was 2004 with her first top game. It wasn't until mid-2006 that I had reliable Internet, but in the year before that I'd started downloading small scenarios or civilizations for Civ3 and Civ4 from CFC and a few other sites - by dial-up. That increased once I had access to DSL, and it was finally possible to download a patch for Civ4.

I joined CFC in spring 2007, initially since I was downloading more Civ4 content and to partake in a few discussions there. But I was becoming increasingly tired of playing Civ4 on underpowered hardware, and after discovering the Stories and Tales section, decided to start a Civ3 story and retire Civ4 for the time being. That story took over 9 months to complete, and by then I was a Fanatic.

Off Topic was gradual. At first I was highly focused on the Civ3 forums with occasional Civ4 posts. The Civ3 forums aren't quite as popular now as they were then, and between that and just being here awhile I've branched out, though I still at least check the Civ3 forums nearly every time I'm here.
