Somewhat predictably an annual thread... :) This time about 2017.

2016 thread: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/what-have-you-achieved-in-2016.603842/

As for myself... meh:

1) Started working as freelance lit translator, and there now exists a book with 12 stories by F.Kafka, translated by myself.
2) More work at some local culture centers (philosophy)
3) Wrote a little more, and my new book is sent to publishers. Expected to be available by April.
4) Some good lectures. But i don't like being a lecturer.
5) Met a couple of girls - they were (at least one of them) clinically insane.
6) Expecting the contract to soon happen for a second translation. & money.
7) Became a little more known as a writer.
8) Moved to a different apartment (last April). Spacious, but there are some issues. Generally an improvement, but i don't think i will stay when the contract expires (next April).
9) Mood is the same as in 2016, or a bit worse.
10) -1 year younger

And you? ;)

2017 will probably not remain in my memory as a year in which I've achieved much, but hopefully as THE year in which I've set the groundwork for a lot of the achievements that will come in the future. My list probably sounds pretty pathetic for people who haven't had many problems with these things, buuut...

...I've finally managed to leave behind my habit of only tidying up my living space when I get too annoyed by not being able to find the things I'm looking for because everything is a chaos and instead have started putting back things to where they belong every day.
...I've finally gotten into the habit of leaving my house everyday, even when I don't have to go anywhere, just to be outside for a while.
...I've kept up with my goal to draw at least 30 minutes every day for more than 6 months now, and usually draw 6+ hours on Saturday/Sunday, so I'm getting better at that.... slowly but surely.
...I've thrown most of the political stuff out of my daily reading and watching routine, it's unbelievable how much that can have an impact on your mood.
...and interestingly enough, the amount of infractions I get per month in these forums has dropped a lot in 2017 (I... think at least), but I'm not sure whether that's because of me, or because there have been changes in how the forums are moderated. I'm pretty sure my posts have become more provocative, but at the same time, I have stopped getting personally invested into arguments as much as I did before.

Got married

Published a new AFL player valuation system on our blog

Was recruited by a footy journalist and author to help write a footy stats book due out next year

Helped produce and publish a massive publication at work

Got a temporary new job in a field I'm very good at and which will help me expand my horizons and advance professionally, with a transfer straight back to my old job at the end.

Played in the first ever Canberra edition of a long running charity "musicians vs journalists" footy game (qualified via footy blogging) where I looked like this:

Pretty good year

I unretired early in the year to mentor local business start ups. Fell in with a bad crowd that persuaded me to join a business think tank oriented around the coming acceleration of AI use and how it will impact communities and jobs. That led to helping organize a conference for 200 Chinese investors looking for US business partners. Had to join WeChat. 2018 is looking like more not retired time.

Sounds tiresome!

It's been a really frustrating year. Mold in my old apartment. Had to throw out a lot of furniture and other stuff. My older cat had to be euthanized. The new apartment had serious plumbing issues in the kitchen. I still can't find most of my stuff because other people packed it. I've got neighbors upstairs who don't give a damn if their precious little brats run around and stomp on the floor and scream and squeal half the day.

NaNoWriMo this time around is toast, due to time spent having to deal with other RL crap, plus my XP refuses to access the internet. I'm typing this on a W10 computer and it's driving me nuts.

I guess my major accomplishment this year has been not going postal.

I've been treading water a bit this year but that's okay, because I made some good efforts to enrich my life in 2016, and now I'm just maintaining them and enjoying the renewed sense of purpose.

Read a couple of books, played some videogames, learned some songs on the piano, studied a language, listened to a few lectures, cooked some biscuits, mostly kept my surroundings clean and bright.

I finished making some shelves at the beginning of the year, but I did the bulk of the work at the end of 2016 so that doesn't really count.

I finished building my MAME arcade machine. Again I started that in 2016, but I got the majority of it done this summer, so I'll count that.

That's about it.

Well let's see. I learned some rudimentary web design. I became a halfway decent chess player. I went to Los Angeles for the first time. I think that's it.

I flushed my system from deadlines and expectations

I'm 6-2 in my fantasy football league and in first place. Does that count? I'll let you know in a month or so who wins the playoffs.

Lets see...

1) I always wanted to learn a martial art, so I took that up this year and met some great people through that.
2) Started practicing yoga. Was something I never imagined myself doing, but I really enjoy it.
3) Had a few relationships.
4) Was working a job that I enjoyed, but I decided that I didn't want to live in that city permanently and the pay wasn't that great so I left.
5) Moved 2,500 miles to be near family again.
6) Started a new job. We were suppose to be putting up a small high rise, but the city where I was working is notoriously difficult to deal with so the project ended up being delayed and I got laid off. In a way I was almost glad because my boss was a real tard. He was really passive aggressive, thought he was smarter than everyone else and he'd hang anyone out to dry in a second if it suited him. A real dreamboat.
7) Been preparing to build a house next summer. Have been working on getting all of the planning done for that, which I'm sure will take me well into the new year.
8) And been making an effort to focus more on my well being, rather than my career and financial goals.

So a bit of a 2 steps forward and 1 step back kind of year, but I'm slowly getting to where I want to go.

Too early, 1/6th of the year is still to go.

But...
My year 2017...
- started a new job
- moved to a new city
- gave a conference talk in another country
- made some good progress at my new work
- finally published some manuscripts (well, 2)
- first time 10km below 1h on a real run (local Marathon)
- nearly at goal for this year to do 100 kg deadlift and squat (right now at 95, so easily til the end of the year)
- started learning a new dance (Zouk)
- first time been to Italy
- first time been to a musical
- first time done speed dating
- kept up the friendships with my friends from my old place
- first time been partying in Amsterdam
- did 2 times my ceremonial duties at the PhD defense of 2 of my friends
- first time to a hardstyle festival, also first time partying in Arnhem
- first time had pure whiskey

what i missed:
- there are too many manuscripts in the waiting queue (how many...3 under submission, 1 at the Prof, 3 someone else is doing work, 1 getting written). Would be awesome if they could get finally out, this is too damn annoying
- PhD not finished, will be next year
- still need to visit another country this year (new year's resolution), but that might work out
- no GF in sight

So overall: Pretty damn good :D.

Finished building the extensions on my house.
Had a cataract operation on my right eye. It got infected & spread to the left eye. That's all cleared up now. Left eye scheduled for Dec. 14.
Finished a short story. Waiting for my editor to delivered back my second short story. Rough draft for my 3rd short story should be done this week. Last night, I started toying with my idea for a very dark comedy. It's going remarkably well.

Not looking good for me this year regarding achievements. I guess I will have achieved nothing. My motivations levels are low since the gf and I broke up. I've pretty much given up on everything. :)
