What if Jesus was hanged instead of crucified?

Would there be a gallows on top of church towers, and in the altar?

The catholics often make the crucified jesus look very gory and realistic - bleeding & dirty & whiplashed. Would they make the hanged jesus also realistic - popped eyes, elongated neck and soiled loincloth?

While the cross is quite accepted as a christian symbol, it actually is pretty sick.

I doubt it - being hanged is nuch less aesthetically pleasing then being crucified. (althrough the last one is not nice too, it does not have any disgusting elements). I think the Christians would chose another symbol in such a case.

More likely, a miniature gallows on a chain.

But the cross is a very striking symbol visually. I'm not sure a stylized gallows would have been equally popular. Maybe they'd stuck with that fish ...

But theoretically, having a cross (where jesus died) as a symbol makes as much sense as if we had gallows as a symbol, should jesus have died in one. Right? Both are means of killing people.

Erm, no. The word "Christian" has nothing to do with how Jesus was executed. It simply means "messianic".

the electric chair idea is actually from a quote too, but it referred to jesus being in todays america rather than having been in roman palestine. 'we'd all be wearing little electric chairs round our necks'. don't know who said it.
