What is being a bronie all about?

What started as an ironic joke in the 'chans, resulted in an entire generation of weirdo nerds that would otherwise spend all their time watching Anime watching a show for little girls.

You know, that's not necessarily bad. I don't mind the idea of subverting gender roles, we need more of that in this day and age.

The problem is when these adult fans attempt to co-opt the show away from kids and write massive screeds about how the show was ACTUALLY targeted for adult men and that they are the True Fans. And when the adult men draw and write massive amounts of pornography featuring children.

What could have been an interesting and subversive social movement has turned into a parasitic culture that seeks to immerse a perfectly fine show into the worse aspects of male nerd culture.

I just like the show. And how cute the ponies look.

Take a look at my avatar.

That still doesn't make any sense. The question was raised if Bronies were furries and I said I don't think so. I have no idea what you're talking about. :(

Do they actually watch the show?

Did you have to go there to disparage people? I've never seen any evidence of anything remotely like this from Bronies here or anywhere and I hope you'll drop this.

But really, how is this any different than any other extreme fan base and why is it bad? How is it parasitic? It seems to me they create a lot of content for themselves and amongst themselves and draw in a new audience and attention.

Well, you asked what's being a brony all about. And then when somebody said something about furries you said you were waiting for a brony to speak up. And I told you that I am one.

Spergs gonna sperg.

Anybody who has used the internet at any point in the past 20 years has been in proximity to the "worse aspects of male nerd culture." As long as these people remain anti-social and bitter that the girl is still going out with the jock, you won't get away from this.

Ah I see.

Well for clarification, this is how I got all confuz:

So it's a kind of fetishized role play? Like cosplay?

That what I thought furries were. I don't think Bronies are into that but I am waiting to hear from one.

Clearly you have not checked the list of members of the Bronied CFC SG.
Can you see how you confused me there...your reply to mine had nothing to do with the issue of furries. I asked if they were into that, and you said I haven't checked the list, which didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Anywhoo...

But does anyone dress up like a my little pony? I bet there's some that do.

Just a term for a fan of the TV show. The trekkie parallel is a pretty good one.

Cool beans. So really no significance behind the avatars?

I don't see too many star trek avatars but that doesn't mean the two fan bases aren't similar. I just wondered why Bronies everywhere use their avatars to display the fact that they like the show.

Damnit I did a search first, I swear!

But does anyone dress up like a my little pony? I bet there's some that do.

Yes, there are several, just like people dress up like spiderman and Jake/Finn and Zelda.

There's nothing inherently freakish about it unless all cosplay is devil-worship to you. (not you specifically)

But does anyone dress up like a my little pony? I bet there's some that do.

Of course some do. There's people like that in every relatively large fandom.

We could formulate a law on this, like that one about length of discussions and nazis:

"Given a certain fandom, the probability of regular cosplayers appearing within it is directly proportional to it's relative size." or something like that. ;)

Is this thread worth having open so that non-A&E people can browse it or should I have it shut down?

That'll be up to the moderators to decide.

Why have it shut? Unless you don't like what people are saying.

When people no longer have anything to say they'll stop posting here anyway.

No I don't care about what people are saying. It's just kind of a duplicate thread if there is one in A&E already. However, one merit of this one is that people like Nick Carpathia can rant on about it (relatively) free of infraction and the Bronies can (mildly)counter-troll.

Which neither side could do in the A&E thread (look at the last page for a great example).

Because every time this topic is brought up, it ends up becoming "World War I Reenactment Day".

I would be hypocrite to deride people for liking kids shows (I love Adventure Time), so I don't, but I still don't understand the appeal of MLP.

It's just a fun little show that shows surprising depth for its concept. I'm not really a fan of its presentation but I understand why people like it.

But that A&E thread is all about what's happening in the show, isn't it? (I haven't looked lately)

This is about the bronies themselves.

(Or do they talk about dressing up? I shall have to look.)
