Not particularly on CFC, but mostly in smaller forums (as in having around 1000 members).
Recently i was asked- some minutes ago- to be an admin somewhere, and i asked for more information as to the work required.

Does the admin do the boring job, or the less boring one than the moderators? Any info is welcome. The site is literary of course :)

The moderators are the lords that club the peasants. The administrator is the king who has to cooperate with the lords and keep the kingdom stable, and when feeling like it you can also go club peasants.

:D Well then it is better to be an admin in my case, cause i want to oversee things from my high castle ;)

Should be an interesting job.

I a mostly interested to learn if the admin has to do much else other than create new mods who take care of the moderating. Is there any function in the site that he has to take care of?

The person who owns the forum told me that i should "organize" it.

You should ask if there's a separate tech admin, or if someone else is doing the tech maintenance, else you also have such responsibilites like updating forum software, take care if the server is crashing, backups or get the hackers out if someone broke in.

Thanks! I will ask that for sure.

The main job to assign roles to the forum moderators and make sure the site is stable. Some administrators also assume other roles as required when they don't have enough staff to do them.

It is an honorary position, since it is the official forum of one of the magazines that has published my work. I think this solidifies my position with them, if nothing else.
That said i do not want to accept already without knowing what the load is, so as to avoid future friction, so i told them that it is an honor, but asked for more info :)

This sums it up quite nicely:

Spoiler :
I have heard rumors that "kidding" isn't meant to be taken seriously. Believe this conspiracy at your own risk.

I run a forum myself. We're all mostly well-behaved (I only remember closing a thread once due to misbehaviour) so my job is mostly to make sure posts are put in the right place & to post interesting content and fix technical issues.

It's not a real big site though. I did have one moderator before but she decided to go back to school and gave it up as she was too busy.

Well they replied to my letter. It seems they will hire moderators at the same time, but for the first few days i will be sort of overlord of the forum.
At least there are no tech-related demands.

So, in a way, it will be like having my own literary forum :)

A whole bunch of "innocent" internetpeople to indoctrinate with your writing

I assume, by reading your post, that you're going to accept?

To me a forum administrator takes care of all the techie & logistical aspects of the forum - upgrading software, looking after the server during downtime, make forum-wide announcements, assign moderators, re-organize subforums, etc.
