What is the proper etiquette to show respect for the flag?

How do you show your respect to your flag during the National Anthem?

Hypothetical - A devoted Christian wife is being graciously submissive towards her husband late at night. The tv is on in the room and the station is ending its broadcasting day. Per fairly standard American practice at the end of the broadcasting day, the station starts to broadcast the National Anthem. Should the woman break position to respect the flag on the screen or does she continue to graciously submit to her husband?

What would Jesus do?

Well I also remove my hat as a sign of respect when I enter private buildings or houses, as well as to respect any number of other things, so I simply remove my hat out of respect for the flag and the anthem, but I don't always place it over my heart, more often hold it behind my back while standing.

So choose the "I'll stand but that's it" option, seems to fit what your doing.

As was pointed out in that thread, the customs and courtesies to be rendered to the flag during the National Anthem is indeed part of the US Code.

What's the U.S. code?

Here in Canada you're supposed to stand for the national anthem, which is what I do, because it's polite.

The hand over heart thing seems to be done by politicians who want to look good on TV, athletes, etc.

Saluting the flag is something that is done by soldiers and the sarcastic.

No, I think it's because we don't respect the way you try to spin everything and resurrect threads closed for obvious reasons.

Two thoughts. The other thread was closed largely because this topic was OT to that threads topic. Spin-off threads, such as this, are often done when an interesting topic comes up like that. Secondly, there is no spin here, and I have tried to open it up so that people from other countries can comment as well.

Fair enough.

You are both clearly evil people for disagreeing with his own personal opinion.

This isnt my own personal opinion. As I have pointed out repeatedly, it is indeed part of the US Code. Its what actually 'should' happen during the national anthem. As I said before simply because some dont do what they should do, doesnt invalidate the US Code on the matter.

And I would never call anyone evil simply for disagreeing with me. While some would, I dont do that.

Assuming a public setting, I stand and put my hand on my heart, but it's the invisible hand of the free market that puts it there. Never can tell when a "patriot" with cash and legal needs may be observing.

What's the U.S. code?

Here you go:

Rendering respect to the flag by placing your hand over your heart is part of Title 36 US Code. http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/36...1----000-.html

§ 301. National anthem

(a) Designation.— The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.

(b) Conduct During Playing.— During a rendition of the national anthem—

(1) when the flag is displayed—

(A) all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;

(B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and

(C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; and

(2) when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

Here in Canada you're supposed to stand for the national anthem, which is what I do, because it's polite.

Good info!

The hand over heart thing seems to be done by politicians who want to look good on TV, athletes, etc.

Dont you think they could be doing it for something other than just 'looking good'?

Saluting the flag is something that is done by soldiers and the sarcastic.

Or by someone who doesnt know what the correct protocol is.

I take it you keep your wallet in your left breast pocket then?

Yes, it was all part of the effort of the reactionaries to ban flag burning yet again in 2008 while they still controlled the White House. And this was what was left of it after they took out all the obviously unconstitutional parts. Parts I bet you agree with...

And I would never call anyone evil simply for disagreeing with me. While some would, I dont do that.

No, you just put an obviously sarcastic quote which was deliberately taken out of context in your sig:

The pro-life terrorists are obviously receiving funding from fundamentalist churches through bake sales and prayer meetings. - Formaldehyde
It's not because you think I am evil. It's because you respect my Constitutional right to disagree with your own personal opinions so much, right?

What percentage of US flags are manufactured in China?

Well, there is no such thing as proper etiquette. I want people to decide what they want to do.

I honour my flag myself. But I'm not forced into doing it.

I never said I wouldnt think your opinion wasnt silly. Just not evil.

And instead of derailing the thread, if you want to talk about my sig feel free to pm me. I dont ignore anyone. :goodjob:

I stand up, but thats it.But i usually cry when our national anthem plays.:D

No ones forcing you to do anything. Render respect/honor all by your lonesome. Its yoru strength, or lack thereof, that renders that salute, hand over heart, or legs to stand.

Its not something someone should have to force you to do. Thats not how respect works.

When I salute the flag, I consider what other soldiers have done and sacrificed for this country since its inception. When I really think about some of the things they went through for this country, it humbles me. Thats why I salute the flag.

You derailed any honest discussion about the issue in your OP. But that's par for the course...

So you folks dont respect your flag because you dont respect your country anymore, correct?

I've got 3 flags. That's a hell of a lot of saluting. If I cared, which I don't.

Canadians don't worship their flag. They stand for the anthem, but not the flag.

Perhaps we should adopt the leaf of a plant as our symbol...

Then, nobody would mind if we did burn it. It would be considered patriotic to do so.
