What is the proper etiquette to show respect for the flag?

How do you show your respect to your flag during the National Anthem?

It's very strange to not believe in the existence of symbols. How do you drive a car? You just ignore those unimportant flat pieces of metal with paint on the sides of the road?

I don't drive. :p

Those are road symbols, meant to better aide driving. It not that I dont believe in symbols. Is that I dont think one should elevate anything to more than it isn't.

A flag is a cloth piece.
A road sign is a metal bit.
A picture of the Uncle Sam is a picture of Uncle Sam.
How about if I got an American flag tatooed on my penis, would it be obligitory for real american patriots to salute it?

Is the flag poll erected?

Sorry couldn't resist

I certainly would. Though I might not take part in the 'flag raising' ceremony.

A bible or koran is just a piece of paper? A swastica is just a squiggly line? A "private property" sign is just a piece of wood? It's a wonder how someone can think at all without an understanding of the concept of symbols.

You must get that tattoo done Ralph.

I can guarantee you wouldnt. How about this:

After four years spent in a Russian detention camp with Cheezy the Wiz after being mistakenly accused of spyhing, I suffer a catastrophic mental breakdown and am indefinitely confined to a maximum security mental institue in Omsk. I strike up a relationship with the pyychiatrists, and seem to be making good progress until one day when I imagine an American flag tatooed on a penis and vomit a disgusting red, white and bluye coloured bile down my front. would thta be disrespectful?

RRW covered in red, white and blue vomit... well, I can hardly think of anything more patriotic. The very idea not only makes me love my country more, but actually seeing it might make me believe in a just and benevolent god.

How about this: Following a childhood of being molested by a deranged clown called Molestro the Fagnificent, who wore red white and blue, sung the US anthem constantly and lived on 1776 America St, Bourough of United States Hill, aAmerica city, USA, North America, I see a picture of an Uncle Sam on stilts throwing the opening ball at a baseball game between the US Americos and the Sea to Shining Sea Patriots, and whisper to myself "he must be a very molestrous man", would that be disrespectful?

When the US flag is presented (as opposed to just displayed or stuck somewhere), I'll stand and if wearing a hat (which I usually am outside) I'll put the hat over my heart, otherwise I'll generally just stand at attention. Hand-to-heart for the US national anthem, though (and definitely standing and doffing cap for anyone other country's anthem as well).

That said, I don't do it because the US Code says so - as Form said, that was put in place by some congresscritters that were unsuccessfully trying to get flag burning banned. I mentally file that in the same category as congressional resolutions regarding national ___ recognition days, state insects/minerals/whatever, Medals of Freedom, "in God we trust", and similar goofiness. I do it because my parents raised me to do it that way, because the Navy taught me to do it that way, and most of all because it is a commonly-understood mark of respect to my country, as distinct from the individuals in office.

There are two reasons why I'd burn the flag. The first is if it were ever made illegal, and the second would be if I felt that the country as a whole no longer respected the ideals cited in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Now Religious symbols to me carry a different twang for me. I find them to be the exception to this rule as religion should be always tolerated. And maybe some racial symbols.

Okay understand this.
I know symbols are meant to hold or convey certain messages or values. Yes that is true. But they should not be elevated to beyond their status of what they are. We should not worship objects or entitle them near-idol respect. Especially things like flags. So, if I want to burn a flag, Im going to god-damn burn it. (Assuming its mine)

My normal attitude towards flags is merely just ignore it/neutral. But If I wanted to, I can use a flag to wipe the table dry. Cause Cloth is good to dry with.

Patriotic to red white and blue eh?

I'll generally stand, yes.

I mean, dude, come on. I know it represents our country and everything, but I don't need to publicly embrace our nation (metaphorically, of course); I can 'love my nation' and 'be loyal' and etc and etc by just doing what I normally do.

You want to protect your heart from the sight of the flag?
Does this serve some greater purpose?

Mostly I just feel goofy holding my hat at my side - over my heart just seems more appropriate. *shrug*
