What is the world's bravest nation

I'd have to agree on the Poles as well... i have no real knowledge of their history, but they have such a reputation for having been involved in conflicts which have had such importance in history... it's really quite amazing, they seem to have really gone through hell and held their own

Yeah like torturing Ukranian lands for over 2 centuries  Not all the bravery comes from self-defence.

Torturing?
Poland didn't conquer Ukraine. It allied with/subdued Lithuania. During establishing of Lublin Union, magnates of Ukraine decided to stick with Poland (as Lithuanians were not willing to closen the ties at first), and so, Ukraine got directly under "rule" of Poland. However, Polish "rule" is not a good description. Poland was pretty decentralised, to the point of becoming anarchic later on. As a Polish proverb says, "a gentleman in his posession is equal to a gouvernor"
It's not like Poles harming Ukrainian peasants. Ukrainian magnates did that. And that they eventually got polonised, it's another case.
Of course, gentry (Polish or Ukrainian) minded cossack revolts and fought them, but what do You expect - and it had little to do with nationality.

However I would add that I never have supported the "bash France on WW2" theory. I get my fun on bashing them about the Napoleonic wars :mischief:

Yeah, well we French (or at least half-French) whooped your limey asses at Yorktown :p

The English were quite overrun by the Vikings, no ?

Not quite. The Vikings were never able to conquer the Kingdom of Wessex (South West England, Capital at Winchester in Hampshire) which beat them in a series of battles and eventually retook the rest of the country.

Just because those wimps in the North, Midlands and South-East couldn't beat the Vikings don't go thinking all of us Englishmen were easy pickings ;)

Until William the Conqueror came...

The Anglo Saxons nobles (including those in Wessex) actually agreed to let him become King because Ethelred was so diabolical. Neither Sweyn nor his son Canute ever managed to decisively beat the Anglo Saxons and both were King by agreement not by mere force of arms.
