Unlike most other Englich speaking countries, the Australian accent can be broadly broken up into 3 different varieties.

So here are the 3 varieties. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varieties_of_Australian_English
Broad. The is the stereotypical Aussie accent for non Australians when they think of how we speak. This accent has a very nasal sound to it. For a while this was the widely spoken accent, but it is in decline.
Examples of speakers include Steve Irwin, Paul Hogan, and Dame Edna Everage

General. This is what most Aussie speak. You generally can tell when this is spoken because most words that end in -or, -er, or the like are pronounced as a. Just about any word can end in a. And example of this would be failure would be pronounced as failia.
Example of speakers include Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe, Nicole Kidman, and Prime minister John Howard.
Vidoe example. Listen to the speaker at the end of the commerical.

Cultivated. This accent is often confused with the British Recieved Pronounciation. I know this, because many times I have been asked if I am actually British, in spite of the fact being born and bred Aussie. But there are enough differences from the Cultivated English accent and BRP. Basically this acccent does not follow the general bad pronounciations that most Australians are known for.
Examples of speakers include Geoffrey Rush, Dame Joan Sutherland an Judy Davis.
Video eaxmple. I am still looking.

As you can tell, I speak with the Cultivated accent.

What are your generally feelings about these accents?

I love the Broad type.

I watched Steve Irwin Crocodile hunter's show for a long time and I just love that accent.

:mischief: Sound clip links would be nice.:mischief:

I find the Broad accent to be extremely annoying when spoken by men, but it kind of turns me on when a blonde suntanned Aussie babe talks like that. Well now that I think about it, Id probably still be turned on even if she had no voicebox and was using one of those gadgets that make people sound like robots.

WHat's the difference between Aussie and Kiwi accents? (and appologies in advance for the NA ignornace ;) )

general and cultivated sound like the same thing

Having worked at the Elvis musem in Vegas (and still regreting it) Iam think I have a fair grasp on all of the commen wealth accents ..I would have to say the general is my favorite out of U.K.,Australia,New Zeland,South Africa,Ireland I would pick thick irish accents (reminds me of my gradmother)
I have a odd accent myself being half white mexicans (americans) say I sound white and white people say I sound mexican - when I speak spanish in mexico they ask me if I am French.

My point was, that unlike most other english speaking countries, we only have three general catergories, compared to lots of variety in most English speaking countries.

Only three? Where do Kath and Kim fit into your spectrum? Surely they are beyond "broad"?
