What is your favourite scene in a Movie?

Speaking of both violence and Kubrick, I think the duel scene from Barry Lyndon is absolutely superb. It is absolutely classic Kubrick: he really takes his time, dwelling on each moment and each event, building up the tension. It's a very methodical way of film-making but a very effective one, and he uses it in all his films, no matter how different they may be.

A feature I especially like about this scene is how it dwells on the correctness of the procedure. The referee speaks as though he is in charge of a formal sporting event. But all that elegance fails to mask the fact that this is a brutally violent event which could easily lead to the death of one or both participants.

The background to this is that Barry Lyndon is an experienced and accomplished soldier and adventurer. We have seen in him duels before. But he has become depressed and alcoholic. A series of misfortunes and tensions has led his wife to try to kill herself. His wife's son by an earlier marriage, Lord Bullingdon, has always hated Barry Lyndon. He now challenges his stepfather to a duel - even though Lyndon is an old soldier, and he himself is totally inexperienced in such matters.

Not sure, there's a lot to choose from...
Se7en is excellent, yeah... I also like Jack Nicholson in The Shining a lot... and the opening scene from Matrix is great, too.
And nobody's yet called in Vader saying 'I am your father' in The Empire Strikes Back. Why is that, gentlemen?

I would have to say Tom Hanks in Castaway, where he loses Wilson. It is the saddest I have ever felt about an inanimate object.

Clockwork Orange - Singing in the Rain.

I'm not going to link, for obvious reasons.
