However, I am beginning to hold the opinion that there are sufficient difference between the British and American dialects that we should just stop calling it English and call it American. For one thing, we wouldn't have to listen to the British complaining about us butchering the 'English' language.

My first language is Arabic. And trust me Arabic is much more complex than English. English was really easy for me to learn.
Believe it or not, Civilization 1 (for Dos) improved my English alot when I was about 5 or 6.

Oh, yes. I vividly recall my first watchings of My Name is Joe and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Great movies, but I had to watch them multiple times before I understood everything.

My mother tongue is Spanish (Castilian spanish, although there is not much difference in pronunciation among all the flavo(u)rs of spanish)
I learned english in class. Watching TV only in spanish doesn't help to learn english pronunciation, which I found more difficult than grammar). Then I have been working in England and the US.
I also learnt a bit of basque, but not so much as to speak it. (and it is completely different from Spanish, French or English, FYI)

My first language is English. French was learned at school and from a Swiss girlfriend. Hindi was self taught and brushed up on visits to India. I'm rusty on both of these now. Anything else I speak is just for comic effect.

Danish is my first language. English is my second, which I've learned by playing videogames, watching movies and reading books. I probably picked up a little bit of it in school, too. The advantage of living in a small country like Denmark is that you're pretty much forced to learn other languages, because it's simply not profitable to do translations into a language spoken by so few.
I've gotten very familiar with the english language throughout my life, because I'm exposed to it while watching tv, playing civ and other games and surfing internet forums. I also try to read all books in their original language(provided the original language is English), partly because I feel most books lose a lot in the translation, partly because hardly any of the truly good fantasy series exists in danish and partly because I think the English language sounds much better.
I sometimes catch myself thinking in English...that's kind of scary.

It is a special argot developed in Brno during the centuries of coexistence of native Moravians with medieval colonists like Germans, Italians, and Jews. In the 19th century and early 20th century it was very common among lower class people and but nearly incomprehensible to others. It is nearly extinct today, except among elderly people. However, many words and expressions are used in modern Brnese youth slang.
