Interesting band which I properly miss for not seeing them live on stage which is odd as I don't particularly like their music but the performances are excellent.
"Walk Away Renee" (1966) by The Left Banke is a classic of the 'flower power' generation. It was written by the band's keyboardist, who had become infatuated with the bassist's girlfriend. The composition was partly inspired by one of the seminal songs of the era, "California Dreamin'" by The Mamas and the Papas, released just a few months before. While strongly associated with the counter-culture of the 1960s, neither song is psychedelia. Rather, they're part of a short-lived niche genre called "baroque pop", blending classical instruments such as strings and flutes into folky, soft-rock. Y'know, I've been listening to this song off-and-on for decades, and I've only just noticed the band spells its name with an 'e.'
The real Renee Fladen, c. 1966? Today, age 75, she's the vocal coach for Bay Area medieval music group The Sherwood Consort.
And for comparison's sake, the aforementioned "California Dreamin'" (1965)
I was looking for who remembers what but ran into this
Stevie Nicks - Landslide
and then remembered another landslide from the memory lane
Transvision Vamp - Landslide of Love
so I started browsing oldies & goldies - 80s was great
Classix Nouveaux - Never Again
and even some Finns made decent stuff though the vocalist is British and this was made after ~30y hiatus. Thinking now of all the (c)rap we could've avoided if they'd continued making music during those years. There're very few simpler & better tunes than this.
