What They Found in my Head...

Just how bad are these headaches?

A couple of people I've known have died from brain tumours (and they really suffered with fitting and the like), but yours, thankfully, seems to be benign. Still no fun, though.

Basically, the headaches are a constant pressure in the right side in the back of the head. I have them when I get up and stay there all day long... and no meds I take help. At least I have a high pain threshold and I can ignore it for the most part.

A colleague of my wife had a growth about 4-5 times bigger than yours (stretched into both hemispheres)- she also took the scan in.
That one was thought to be bleakly and stonily impossible, but they tried surgery anyway.

To keep herself occupied, she was - within a week or so - back in work for a few days per week
That was a few years ago now, and no fallout whatsoever.

No reason to think yours is a bad case but - even if it were - much worse cases can - and have - completely succeeded. Good luck.

Best wishes on safe and effective relief!

Go ahead Joecoolyo... I hold no punches and don't expect anyone else to. I'm too old to take things personally and I cannot be insulted.

Oh no! It wasn't going to be insulting, or anything like that! I just wanted to reference this little fella since your avatar reminds me of him

His episode centered around his brain issues as well, so double relevancy.

I had that avatar once.

I don't know you but let me give my condolences: you seem a decent human being down on his luck.

Harsh realm, Fr8monkey... keep us posted.

I'm going to keep the updates coming...

OK. I was wrong earlier... it is a tumor.

Went to the doctors yesterday. Basically, I am going in to surgery to have the growth removed on May 12... two weeks from today.

In simple terms, the hole in the skull that has the auditory and facial nerves going out, is being blocked by the tumor. The expanding growth is pushing against the cerebellum into the area that controls my breathing. 6 months of waiting and I could have a stroke or lass control of my breathing.

They are going to open a 'C' shaped hole behind my right ear and take out a piece of the skull about 3" (7.5 cm) and try and get as much as they can. A piece about a grain of rice is expected to stay to save the nerves. I may then need chemo or a 'gamma knife if it is cancerous... But that is only a 2% chance of that. I then get some hexagon shaped plates put in to hold the piece they take out.

I have a good chance to loose 75 - 100% of my hearing and a small chance of permanent loss of feeling in my face and tongue on the right side.

I am checking in to Swedish Hospital at 5:30 on the 12th and surgery starts at 7:30. It will take about 6 hours or so. 1 - 2 days in ICU and 3-5 days in the hospital.

Below is a video of the basic surgery... DO NOT WATCH IF SQUEAMISH!!! You have been warned.

I'm not kidding...This is gross!

Having recently had my heart opened by the surgeon's knife, I can understand your anxiety as the day approaches. Please carry all my best wishes for success with you into the operating room. :)

Ouch, that sounds pretty bad. :/ On the bright side, though, it's good that you took care of this before it could've gotten much worse.

In my recent surgery in my intestines I ended up with basically the best case scenario (short of not having to do it in the first place) with minimum impacted areas and a very quick recovery time, so I hope that it'll be the same for you as well.
