The massive map of Europe is pretty good.

My brother is a Märklin model trains enthusiast; he hooked me up on TTD when I was little. The idea of building your little logistics empire, might have lead me to Civ.

Right now, I'm playing the last season I'll ever play of Diablo III, with IV just around the corner. And I have never finished my Starcraft 2.

While I like OTTD the one big problem I have with it (all the way back to the original TT) is the scale. Trains and infrastructure are absolutely massive compared to everything else. Settlements are dwarfed by stations, and the relative distances between towns are tiny. You can tweak the settings to spread things out more, but then timescales get dumb with trains taking weeks to get anywhere (not that the timescales make that much sense on the base settings).

It's on scale, for the numbers - eg Thessalonike there has 2000 citizens, instead of 1 million something. But if it had 1 million, you wouldn't need to do anything, even a single bus would earn as much as a train - that is because the alternative would be to have to wait an hour for buses to complete a route, and no one would play that ^^

I lived much of my life in a town of a few thousand people. And the train station was not even close to half the size of the town the way it is in your pictures. I'm fine with the game starting with low populations, I just want the relative size of a town and a train to make sense.

As for a bus taking an hour, well, that's what the time acceleration is for....

It's also about timing; the developers wanted the player to have access to more modern trains and planes in the end game. So, you have to cover xx years in a single game, otherwise you will still be buying old trains and no monorail several hours into a single game. That's how I remember it anyway.

^^ Fwiw, that's the largest platform size (7tracks). You could use even (iirc) 1 track if you wanted to (obviously the trains going there would need to be a lot smaller).
Large train stations cover a lot of city squares too, so it's not that unrealistic imo.
So if the map wasn't 2000 something x 2000 something, but a huge multiple of that, it would be able to present the city in scale; clearly it's not just a few blocks from the center to the airport or to Chalkidike.

I still play For the king ( rogue elite turn based strategy game) and League of Legends. Dropped chess after achieving my goals in it.

In the POE forums, there is talk of how D4 has snatched up many of its features. When does D4 beta start, or has it?

From Blizzards website:

Open Beta and Early Access Weekends Duration

  • Early Access to the Open Beta begins March 17 at 9 a.m. PDT and concludes March 20 at 12 p.m. PDT.
  • The Open Beta begins March 24 at 9 a.m. PDT and concludes March 27 at 12 p.m. PDT.

I think the Early Access weekend requires certain steps that I didn't do in time, so it is March 24th for me. I have pre-ordered the game.
Diablo IV is released on June 6th.

It will be hard for it to to be better than PoE; but do let us know what you think during beta. Can anyone join the open beta?

Yes, the Open Beta starting March 24 is open for everyone.

If I'm also granted access a weekend earlier, I'll share my thoughts earlier as well, for those interested.

I did try PoE for some weeks some years ago, but just couldn't get into it. I was utterly confused and overwhelmed by choices. Couldn't find a way to 'see through' the internal logic of building your character with an end goal in sight. It lacked transparency and a sense of overview. Diablo IV has obviously been inspired by PoEs skill tree system; I just hope they improved the design and made intuitive decision making easier to achieve.

But the really big nut they need to crack, is the endgame. The endgame of D3 kind of sucks and lacks variation. Seasons have kept D3 alive imo.

Blizzard accepted my my very old D2 battlenet login so I downloaded the new app. I will try the open beta. The PoE skill tree is massive and confusing to newcomers, but it allows (once you understand it, enormous flexibility and and diversity of builds. You can even redo one's build if it doesn't suit you later. I struggle to keep up with all the new add ins and changes that we see every 3-4 months. In any case, there is so much content (that is all very different) that I can pick and choose what kind of experience I to have each time I play. If you ever want to give it another try, let me know and I will walk you through the opening Acts and answer all your questions. Since you are in Europe, I will even get up early or stay up late to match your play times.

I am quite curious to how D4 stacks up against PoE and all my very fond memories of D2.

Thank you for the kind offer, but I just don't have the time in my life for playing two huge RPGs. I know how much of a time sink Diablo III has been for me over the years. I barely have time for one as it is right now. I don't want to give up playing some Civ6 either from time to time, especially considering the new leader packs. :crazyeye:

If you are wondering what this is, it's a combination of logic gates and memory storage, to force not only passing trains to choose all 8 routes before using the first route again, but also set the order that each route is used.
(not by me, btw, but it does look cool :) )

I always found that the big problem with TTD was how day and night schedules didn't apply, and also bad scaling, so a cargo boat, which just should plod on through the high seas, doesn't yield as much as a couple of dinky cargo trucks.

Cargo boats only make sense in the game if you have absolutely massive amounts to carry and thus can form a line of them. Otherwise... they just move way too slowly and don't make money.
Basically trains make more money in sink industries (no production on one end), and airplanes are better for passengers.

I know. Passenger hovercrafts are *it* for waterborne transportation.

I've played Diablo IV for a couple of hours tonight; first impression is that it feels very much like a hybrid of PoE and D2. Much more D2 than D3. Difficult to form an opinion, because I still don't fully understand a lot of the new features and additions and there are server lags ruining the experience a bit. Best part so far is the atmosphere, art direction, story, cinematics and tone. I feel they nailed that part. As for gameplay, it feels not great, nor bad - somewhere in the middle. Quite repetitive with the same 3-4 different monsters everywhere. It's mainly the gameplay that feels unpolished and like an unfinished product, which is understandable. It is a Beta after all.
